The Department of Physics (DTU Physics) invites applications for a position as Senior Researcher for Building and Maintaining Ultra-High-Vacuum Equipment with High Pressure Cells at SurfCat.

Responsibilities
The work will be focused around three of our large and very complex Ultra-High-Vacuum (UHV) systems. Two of these are equipped with mass-selected cluster sources that can generate entities ranging from single atoms to 10 nm nanoparticles as well as a magnetron for making different substrates/support materials. On one of the systems, the generated clusters can be tested for their catalytic activity using mass spectrometry in a newly installed high pressure-cell connected directly to the equipment. This also allows for measurements of the activity of clean and promotor modified single crystals. This newly constructed high pressure cell arrangement and its further extensions to industrially relevant pressures are envisioned to also be implemented on the other two UHV-systems along with integration of a UHV-suitcase so the sample can be brought to analysis in a fourth UHV system equipped with a newly acquired STM. Integration to our TEM and E-TEM facilities at DTU is also envisioned. All systems are beyond the high-pressure cell equipped with XPS, ISS, and TPD which all can be used without exposures to air.

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

Qualifications
The successful candidate is well-motivated, hardworking, and willing/able to work as part of a team supervising students, PhD students and postdocs. The candidate should beyond a PhD degree in Surface Science have extended experience as a postdoc and fulfil the requirements for a senior scientist. It is absolute mandatory that the candidate has extensive experience with construction and implementation of high-pressure cells in conjunction UHV equipment as well as with maintenance of UHV equipment, including standard surface science methods such as XPS, ISS, TPD, and STM.  The candidate must also have extended experience with preparation of not only the support (including single crystals) and the mass-selected nanoparticles, but also how to prepare and clean the reactants to below ppb levels of impurities as well as analysis of product distributions using mass spectrometry. General experience in fundamental aspects heterogeneous catalysis is considered a huge advantage.

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc. To be appointed as a senior researcher, you must have completed a didactic/pedagogic education. If you do not have the necessary education, then it is possible to complete this requirement within a period of two years of appointment.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research experience
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
