Associate Professor in Hybrid Photonic Crystal Fiber Technology, Chalcogenide Glass Synthesis, Preform, and Fiber Manufacturing

The Fiber Sensors and Supercontinuum Group at DTU Fotonik, Department Photonics Engineering at Technical University of Denmark is seeking a candidate for a permanent position as Associate Professor in the field of “Hybrid fiber technology, chalcogenide glass synthesis, preform, and fiber manufacturing”. The position is available from February 1, 2018.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position is within hybrid photonic crystal fiber (PCF) technology, as well as arsenic-based chalcogenide materials, glass extrusion and fiber fabrication. The candidate is intended to head these activities within the Fiber Sensors and Supercontinuum Group. This means that there will be a strong focus on not only research within the field but also on attraction of funding to support the activities.

The candidate will also have the sole responsibility for the Glass Lab, Extrusion Lab, and Glass Draw Tower lab and will be a member of DTU Fotonik Work Environment Committee within glass chemistry. The candidate is also expected to have experience within teaching, have experience in establishing new post graduate with good student evaluation courses and have completed or be in the process of completing a dedicated pedagogical education in university teaching.

The position will involve a strong collaboration with University of Nottingham in terms of distillation of glass for the fabrication of ultra-high purity chalcogenide fibers at DTU Fotonik. The candidate is expected to further initiate collaboration with other relevant departments at DTU.

Qualifications
Candidates must

  • hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship
  • document didactic/pedagogic training  

The position is intended for a dynamic person with documented promise in the field. Candidates should have obtained the PhD degree within 5 years of the application deadline. The candidate should be trained in glass chemistry and in particular arsenic-based chalcogenide glass synthesis and preform preparation and have strong experience in safely running a Glass, Extrusion and Glass Draw Tower lab. The candidate should also have experience in infiltrating silica photonic crystal fibers with other glasses, in particular chalcogenide glass and have at least one high profile monograph (single author, journal publication) within hybrid PCF technology. Experience in polymer fibers, polymer fiber sensors and FBGs is also desirable. The candidate should also have documented international mobility with a scientific network that includes established collaborations with strong international groups.

  • Communication skills

Consideration will also be given to:

  • The ability to act independently and publish monographs (single author) papers
  • Experience in teaching by designing a new course and be course responsible
  • Experience in arsenic based safety procedures and glovebox operation
  • The ability of establishing new chemistry and fiber fabrication laboratories

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
