DTU Sustain offers a position for an atmospheric scientist or engineer to support our team with advanced and novel atmospheric experimental and modelling skills and approaches. DTU Sustain performs technology-oriented research on greenhouse gas exchanges including technical and natural sources and sinks. The current research team consists of four faculty staff with research focus ranging from single process studies at the facility or farm scale to observation systems that continuously monitor GHG fluxes in, e.g. rural landscapes and cities. We see a great need and potential to develop this growing field further at DTU with advanced and strong atmospheric research expertise. The new professorate shall develop and increase our ability to understand, quantify and mitigate society’s impacts on atmospheric greenhouse gas budgets.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will join the faculty at one of the world’s leading university departments in environmental engineering. At DTU Sustain you work at the forefront of science providing solutions to major societal challenges related to climate change, sustainability, and environmental quality.

You will interact with students, academia, public authorities, consultants, and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.

We expect that you have developed a strong Danish and international platform within one or more of the topics, preferable with an atmospheric sciences and engineering background and experience.

Your primary tasks will be, in collaboration with the group, to:

  • Perform research at the highest international levels in the cross-field of the societal impacts on the climate system.
  • Build up new experimental approaches and methods for GHG observation (e.g., new mobile and stationary sensor platforms and networks, remote sensing of the atmosphere, forward and inverse modelling of GHG transports in the atmosphere and processes of GHG exchange from facility to national scales).
  • Develop new and effective concepts for GHG exchange monitoring, verification, and reporting to support sustainable development in industrialized countries.
  • Contribute and interact with relevant international research networks and databases and support the IPCC process.
  • Collaborate with the group and create links with colleagues in related sections (e.g., environmental assessment, waste management and circularity, urban metabolism, sustainable development).
  • Teach basic and advanced courses in climate change and atmospheric observation.
  • Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects and be supervisor for PhD students and post-doctoral fellows covering a broad range of atmospheric and sustainability topics.
  • Provide public sector consultancy to inform decision making with regards to GHG management for sustainable development.
  • Find effective solutions for sustainable development and climate change mitigation.

The key evaluation criterion is the candidate’s personal and professional potential for enhancing the research and teaching capacity of the group and for initiating world-class research within the area. The documentation for past performance and achievements is less for applying for an Assistant Professor position than for an Associate Professor position. Candidates are not expected to excel on all mentioned areas nor to have performed within all the topics listed above.

You will become responsible for teaching courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time you are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent). If you are applying for the Associate Professor position, you should also have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research experience
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills
