Senior Researcher in Aeroelastic Stability and Loads of Wind Turbines

The Department of Wind Energy has a vacancy for a Senior Researcher position in the Loads and Control Section (LAC) at DTU Risø Campus. DTU Wind Energy is a mission driven university department with a vision to be the preferred university partner for the global wind energy sector. The department creates value for society through integration of research with education, innovation and research-based consultancy within key fields central to the development and use of wind energy.

DTU Wind Energy develops state-of-the-art design methods to ensure the best performance, lowest cost and overall structural integrity of wind turbines as well as advance the design, operation and control of entire wind power plants for the future needs of the evolving energy system. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modelling of the non-stationary inflow field, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, structural stability and control. LAC focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines, and implements its research in software tools (primarly the HAWC2 software) and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

The senior researcher will join the section for Wind Turbine Loads and Control (LAC) at the DTU Risø Campus in Roskilde. LAC focuses on modelling and analysis of loads and dynamics, aeroelastic stability, and control of wind turbines, and implements its research in software tools and in courses to the benefit of the wind energy community in general.

DTU Wind Energy has the strategic aim through this senior scientist position to strengthen the coordination regarding the research, modelling and code development of the in-house hydro-aero-servo-elastic analysis tool HAWC2.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your work will be focused within aeroelastic stability and loads activities in research and commercial projects in Loads and Control Section at DTU Wind Energy.

Specific tasks will include:

  • Actively participate in attracting national and international funding for research in hydro-aero-servo-elasticity
  • Publish and coordinate dissemination of research
  • Coordinate, across the department, the internal HAWC2 development activities
  • Support both internal and external HAWC2 users and developers
  • (Co-)supervise MSc and PhD students
  • Coordinate HAWC2 related commercial consulting activities with external partners

In addition you will participate in a number of national and international research projects within the field of loads and control, and contribute to the management of the LAC section.

Your work will aim at creating new valuable knowledge within the wind energy and control area and implementation at this in department activities as well as in the industry in both the short and long term. Much of our activities are performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions.

Qualifications
The section for Loads and Control at DTU Wind Energy is looking for a load engineer with an  academic background in loads, control and stability of wind turbines. The candidate must hold a PhD degree in aeroespace/wind engineering or other relevant engineering discipline. Extensive experience with aeroleastic codes such HAWC2/HAWCStab2 or equivalent is a must.

Preferably, the candidate has worked with a wide range of wind turbine concepts, such as up- and downwind, floating and vertical axis wind turbines. Basic knowledge of controller tuning is considered a plus.

In addition, some project management and software development coordination experience is preferable.

Experience with programming languages, such as Fortran and Python is an advantage. It is important that you are open-minded, responsible, ready to engage in a team and have solid communication skills.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to

  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
