Two Assistant or Associate Professorships in Theoretical Interface Science and Catalysis

DTU is seeking two outstanding assistant or associate professors in the field of theoretical catalysis. The two faculty will be founding members of a newly established Catalysis Theory Center at DTU to be lead by Professor Jens Nørskov (read more about the initiative here). The employment will be at either DTU Chemistry, DTU Energy or DTU Physics, depending on the scientific profile of the candidate.

The Catalysis Theory Center will develop further the theory of heterogeneous catalysis and electro-catalysis. This includes development of a fundamental understanding of chemical processes at the gas-solid and liquid-solid interface as well as chemical conversion processes with special emphasis on sustainable production of fuels and chemicals. Links to and inspiration from related areas in homogeneous and biological catalysis are encouraged. The Catalysis Theory Center is a highly collaborative effort, internally and with experimental groups at DTU and elsewhere. It will also be closely linked to the electronic structure theory group at DTU Physics and the Section for atomic scale modelling and materials at DTU Energy. The Catalysis Theory Center will have in place an infrastructure and computational facilities as well as some initial funding for students and postdocs.

Responsibilities
A candidate for an associate professor position is expected to have solid teaching experience while a candidate for an assistant professor position is expected to have some teaching experience and is expected to complete DTU's university teaching education within the first 2 years of employment. The candidate is expected to contribute to teaching in courses within the given department at BSc, MSc, and PhD levels. Furthermore, supervision of undergraduate students, PhD students, and postdocs is expected as well as continuing education and dissemination of research results at all levels.

Successful candidates must be able to:

  • Develop an independent, vibrant research portfolio in the general area of the Catalysis Theory Center
  • Undertake teaching in the courses offered by the department of employment
  • Attract funding for research activities

The assistant/associate professors will perform their research within the Catalysis Theory Center and will have their main office with the rest of the center faculty, staff, students and postdocs and will also be part of the faculty of the department of employment. Teaching will take place at the department of employment.

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a PhD in physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science or related areas with an extensive experience in using electronic structure theory and kinetics for describing catalysis. Candidates for an Associate Professorship must as well have academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training. The candidate must display good communication skills in English, both written and spoken, be innovative and able to work both independently and in cross-disciplinary teams, as well as with international and industrial partners. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have experience with catalysis for sustainable energy solutions.

Significant achievements will be expected within research, and specifically:

  • Original scientific output at an international level
  • Documented and successful teaching and dissemination experience from previous academic career

Requirements for the position are:

  • A strong background in, and an innovative approach to, catalysis theory relevant for fundamental understanding as well as the application potential of new insight
  • Preferably a track record of academic cross-disciplinary collaboration

Candidates also must have a record of excellence in research as demonstrated by publications in top ranked and field relevant academic journals, patents, and presentations at significant conferences.

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:

  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
  • Societal impact
  • Innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership potential and collaboration
  • Communication skills

Consideration will also be given to the candidates’ potential to establish and lead a research team.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and an academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The position is available from September 2018, but later appointments are also possible. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The assistant professor position is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment. An associate professorship is a permanent faculty position.
