The University of the Faroe Islands is the primary higher education and research institution in the Faroe Islands, the nation’s only university and its foremost knowledge centre. The University undertakes research and research-based teaching, providing for synergy between research and teaching to serve the evolving needs and priorities of the Faroes and their wider region.

The University, which plays a vital role in Faroese society, has a staff of around 160 and over 1,000 students. The University is comprised of five faculties and a central administration. In all that it does, the University is committed to equality of opportunity, to inclusivity, and to supporting the well-being of our students and staff in an environment in which all can thrive and flourish.

The Faculty of Natural Sciences and Technology delivers bachelor’s programmes in general engineering, software engineering and biology. Of these, the engineering programme is the newest, with the first student intake in 2021. From 2023 the Faculty will add a new master’s programme in data science to its portfolio.

Research interests at the Faculty include the transition from fossil to green energy, civil engineering, ocean currents and waves, weather and climate change, computer science and data science, biostatistics and bioinformatics, genetic research, environmental biology and chemistry, fish farming and fish stocks.

The Positions
The Faculty of Sciences and Technology is delighted to be inviting applications for two professorships in the engineering field. The successful applicants will contribute to the continuing delivery and development of the recently introduced BSc programme in General Engineering, where students in the last part of their studies – in courses, internships and their final thesis – are able to focus on electrical engineering, energy engineering or civil engineering.

1) Professorship in the area of power systems and high voltage technology

Applicants should hold relevant educational qualifications in the area of electrical power engineering. The appointment will be at the level of Professor or Associate Professor, depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. The appointment will be permanent, subject to appropriate progress after the first year.

The Faroe Islands aims for a 100% renewable electricity sector by 2030. This national goal demands high level expertise and research in power systems and high voltage technology. The research of applicants is expected to be relevant to this national objective. It is desirable that the successful applicant will be able to take the lead, over time, in developing a centre focused on this area.

2) Professorship in the area of civil engineering

Applicants should hold relevant educational qualifications in the area of Civil Engineering.

The appointment will be at the level of Associate Professor or Assistant Professor, depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. Appointment as Associate Professor will be permanent, subject to appropriate progress after the first year. Appointment as Assistant Professor will be a fixed-term (ordinarily 4 year) teaching and research post, subject to appropriate progress after the first year. Promotion to an Associate Professor position will be subject to a positive outcome of an assessment after the fixed-term period. Applicants not holding a PhD may be considered for an Assistant Professor position if they have a credible plan for completing a PhD during the fixed-term appointment.

There is a high level of activity in the Faroe Islands in the building sector, involving construction of buildings, roads, tunnels and harbours. The applicant’s research is expected to be related to such activities. Applicants are also expected to have specific expertise in at least some of the following areas: materials; construction; static building technology, and geotechnics.

Qualifications, expertise, and experiences for the positions
Applicants for both positions should have appropriate experience in research, in teaching and in supervision of university students. Leadership experience in education and supervision of young researchers will be highly advantageous. A proven track record of securing external funding for research and of mentoring young scientists will be also highly advantageous. In addition to the required academic qualifications, practical work experience as an engineer will also be relevant.

It is desirable that applicants have language competences in a Nordic language in addition to English.

Application
Applicants are invited to send an application, including letter of interest, full copies of diplomas (not just front pages), a full curriculum vitae (including working experience), publication list, and description of experience and interests in teaching, research, and development. Applicants are further invited to send a maximum of five of their publications that they consider relevant.

The application must be written in English and sent digitally to umsokn@setur.fo.

Terms of appointment
The positions will be filled according to the regulations governing positions at the University of the Faroe Islands. The salary and general terms of appointment will be in accordance with agreements between the Ministry of Finance and the Faroese professional union, Akademikarafelag Føroya.

Closing date
