At Topsoe we’re leading the way in decarbonization, by supplying technology, catalysts, and services for the worldwide energy transition. It's a journey through science that we began over 80 years ago, with a philosophy to question the limits of possibility and inspire others to think further. Today, we’re a community of over 2,800 problem solvers who are working together to find the answers to the world's biggest challenges. So, whether your expertise is in engineering, operations or broader business roles, we’re all united by a desire to go solve. At Topsoe we value diversity, embrace differences, and we are constantly committed to creating a culture, where everyone feels safe, valued, respected, and included.

We are headquartered in Denmark and have offices and operations globally. Find out more at

Topsoe Battery Materials, a subsidiary of Topsoe, is primarily focused on producing cathode active materials for use in Li-ion cells & Na-ion cells. We are based at the Topsoe headquarters just outside of Lyngby.
Who we’re looking for
As we expand our activities, we are looking for a student assistant to support electrode & cell production for our 1 Ah pouch cell line roughly 15 hours / week. This will involve slurry preparation & characterization, roll-to-roll slot die coating, calendering, and processing the electrodes into pouch cells using our cell assembly equipment.
You will be part of the cell development team, who's primary function is to validate our material and give critical feedback to our synthesis & production teams to optimize the material in various cell formats.

As much of our work will be new to you, you must have a strong aptitude for learning and a practical mindset. You will use and apply your knowledge and curriculum learnings to analyze dispersion and flow characteristics of battery slurries, optimize flow geometries and patterns in a slot die head, and determine ideal porosity conditions for dry electrodes through calendering experiments. You will be a hands-on learner who is motivated to both run electrode trials designed by the scientists and engineers in the team as well as suggest system improvements either in execution or design.

What you’ll bring
Ideally you are in your last year of bachelor or starting master in the summer 2024 in chemical engineering, applied chemistry, physics or comparable subjects.

We imagine that you have:

  • Familiarity with basic lab equipment and lab work.
  • An eye for detail and a strong commitment to produce high quality results in the lab.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to concisely report system improvements, deviations, etc.
  • A good understanding of safety procedures and the ability to contribute to a good safety culture.
  • Analytical thinking and the ability to solve problems and make decisions based on data and analysis.

Prior experience in battery technology is a slight advantage but not at all necessary. It is an advantage if you have an interest in working with Li-ion batteries, now an in the future. For the right candidate it will also likely be possible to do your masters project with us.

We often speak Danish in everyday life, but the corporate language is English. Fluency in English is a requirement and fluency or proficiency in Danish is preferred.
Why join us
In 2024, Topsoe Battery Materials will finish commissioning our 200 ton / year pilot facility and we have already begun validating materials in our brand new pouch cell production. You will therefore have a unique opportunity to be a part of a team in the middle of scaling up its product thus providing a perspective on product development in the battery industry.

As part of the battery materials team, you will join a group of 20 scientists, engineers, technicians, and business managers at our R&D facility. We value a work culture that is based on honesty, trust, mutual respect, and sustainable working habits. We communicate in an informal way and have a flexible work schedule.
How you can apply
If you would like to be part of a team of skilled and professional colleagues in an informal organization, please submit a short application and resume in English and enclose a copy of your grades or exam papers through our website

Please contact Thomas Carpenter, phone +45 26 47 82 39, email:, if you want to know more about the position.
