General Summary
This position works under limited direction and is primarily responsible for the understanding and application of food cultures and enzymes, primarily into the cheese and fermented milks industry.  It requires the transfer of internal knowledge from Innovation to the field, through direct and indirect support to the Sales and Technical Service Organization and to the customer for the purpose of supporting Sales and Marketing efforts.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities (* = Essential Functions)

  • Conducts field evaluations and demonstrations of new ingredient systems in conjunction with Global Innovation including Application Centers. Completes written reports, including conclusions and develops follow-up plans as required in a timely manner.  Maintains accurate visit reports, records and files in the required databases (i.e. Salesforce.com).
  • Provides customer support for product application by plant visits, audits and trouble-shooting issues.
  • Conducts technical presentations to customers, explaining the use of CH ingredient systems in food applications. Organizes and provides training programs for customers and/or industry trade groups and participates in industry and company technical meetings.
  • Acts as a liaison with North American Research Institutes and Industry suppliers to develop relationships to further Chr. Hansen product application goals.  This includes identifying relevant competencies with academic and industry partners which increases CH Application knowledge and competencies in cheese, whey and fermented milks.  This includes but is not limited to: sanitation, processing equipment, analytical tools and ingredient systems.
  • Handles application projects in a timely manner.  Interacts directly with customers and other departments, including Sales, Marketing and Applications as needed in defining specific parameters for requests and projects.
  • Maintains awareness of all appropriate technical information databases to support field application, including relevant technical and industry association memberships.
  • Acts as a training resource for Sales and Technical Service Managers.  Also collects, analyzes and interprets industry practices and trends to present to the Innovation Group.
  • Blends formulas and performs tests using a variety of laboratory equipment.  
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Reports to work on time and works overtime as required and if required to travel for business, maintains a valid driver’s license and good personal credit, resulting in eligibility for a credit card.
     

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  1. Ability to read, write and speak English is a requirement of this position.
  2. Proficient in laboratory techniques of relevance to the dairy and food industries and be able to work in a laboratory environment. 
  3. Personal attributes of drive and energy required.  In addition, a proven ability to take the initiative and be a team player.
  4. Ability to read and follow technical procedures.
  5. Ability to write and present reports and technical papers.
  6. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  7. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  8. Ability to apply principles of logical/scientific thinking to a wide range of problems, and to interpret and use nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, etc.). 
  9. Ability to operate a variety of standard laboratory equipment and instrumentation (such as blending equipment, pH meters, spectrophotometers, etc.).
  10. Possess a working knowledge in Microsoft Office programs.  SAP experience is preferred.
  11. Needs to be competent in the use of office equipment, including computers and have experience with database and spreadsheet application.            
  12. May require travel up to 50%.
  13. These characteristics are normally acquired through a M.Sc. or Ph D. preferred in Microbiology, Food Chemistry, Food Science or related field of study with 5+ years of experience in an industrial food production or ingredients application environment.  Additional years of education and experience may be substituted for each other, as determined by Human Resources. 
     

Working Conditions
Working environment is generally favorable.  Lighting, temperature and noise levels are adequate with occasional exposure to cold temperatures. Personal Protective Equipment is required when working in the laboratory.  This includes a lab coat, and if necessary, safety glasses, dust mask or gloves.  When working in the production plant, a hair/beard net, safety glasses and safety shoes are required and GMP guidelines must be followed.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to lift and/or move materials or equipment up to 50 lbs.  Use of hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls is frequently required.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.  Employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
