Senior Researcher in Glacial Isostatic Adjustment and Sea Level Changes

DTU Space is the Danish National Space Institute. The mission of the Institute is to conduct research, development, public sector consultancy, education and innovation at the highest international level within the following areas: Space Technology & Instrumentation, Earth Observation & Geoscience and Space- & Astrophysics.

The research group Geodynamics at DTU Space advertises a senior researcher position (expected to start on 1st January 2020 or as soon as possible) to perform high-level research in Glacial Isostatic Adjustment and sea level changes. The geodynamic group is involved in research, development, public sector consultancy, education and innovation at the highest international level. The group focus on a variety of important and timely geodynamic processes, such as elastic loading of the earth’s surface, Postglacial rebound, Sea level change, Numerical modelling of geodynamic processes, Ice sheet and glacier mass balance, Ocean tide and atmosphere loading, GPS and crustal motion and plate tectonics. The group is in particular involved in processing and analyzing data from the Greenland GPS network, in collaboration with European and US partners and has over the last decades delivered outstanding research.

Responsibilities and tasks
There are two main research topics: 1) Research in improvement of Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) and earth rheology models for better utilization of GNSS 3D-surface displacement of the solid earth for ice mass loss in Greenland and Antarctica (GNET and ANET) and 2) Present global and regional sea level changes (“fingerprinting”) from mass loss of Greenland and Antarctica.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to contribute to the following:

  • Research in gravity field satellite missions (GRACE and GRACE-FO) for enhanced recovery of ice mass changes
  • Contribution to ongoing ESA projects for ice mass, geodynamics and sea level changes (4D-Antarctica, Climate Change Initiative, Sea Level Budget Closure)
  • General research in land uplift, earth rheology and geodynamics, e.g. related to post-glacial rebound in Fennoscandia
  • Utilization of GNET and other satellite data for routine mass loss estimates and land uplift modelling as part of deliverables to Danish authorities The Danish Agency for Data Supply and Efficiency (SDFE)
  • Study GNET measurements to estimate the viscosity of the mantle underneath the Greenland ice sheet.

Candidates must

  • hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc.
  • document didactic/pedagogic training

We expect that you are highly engaged in your research and have established international collaboration partners and networks. You enjoy working with complex topics and you are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments. Flexibility and self-motivation are desired skills at DTU. In addition, we expect you to be collaborating and contributing to the Geodynamic research group. It is important that you, jointly or alone can attract external funding supporting the development of the research group and the department. Publication records includes first tier scientific papers.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The appointment is a fixed position on an 80 % norm corresponding to 29.6 hrs/week.
