DTU Wind Energy at the Technical University of Denmark has a vacancy in the Loads and Control Section (LAC) at DTU Risø Campus. Our mission is to develop state-of- the-art design methods to ensure the structural integrity of wind turbines. This is a highly multi-disciplinary issue involving modeling of the non-stationary inflow field, aerodynamics, structural dynamics, structural stability and control.

DTU Wind Energy is a department at the Technical University of Denmark with the overall mission to develop and create value using the natural and technical sciences and focusing on wind energy for the benefit of society. This includes research and education in siting and integration, wind turbine technology, and offshore wind energy as well as scientific advice and testing and other research- based services. The department is an internationally leading center in wind energy and cooperates with industry and institutions worldwide.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your work will mainly be focused within control engineering activities of LAC but in close interaction with the other (LAC) disciplines. You are expected to take a leading role in further developing and expanding the section’s theoretical- and experimental expertise in control with applications to wind turbines and wind farms. The development of wind turbine and wind farm controllers will include aspects of both component fatigue load alleviation and production optimization as well as the optimal economical balance between these two aspects.

Dissemination is important, and your work will consequently include implementation of developed tools and knowledge in the international research community and industry with focus on mutual interaction. Moreover, supervision of master and PhD students is a priority for the university.

You will be participating in ongoing national and international research projects, and you are expected to contribute to the generation and management of new projects. There are also good opportunities for developing innovative ideas in the direction of commercial products.

Qualifications
LAC is looking for a talented control engineer with a strong background in control theory and its application in wind energy. The candidate must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained from holding a position as Researcher or Postdoc.

Experience with advanced model based control methods, such as model predictive control, within the areas of the wind energy systems is important. Moreover, candidates experienced with state-of- the-art control design tools as e.g. MATLAB/Simulink are preferred. The candidate must further have an internationally recognized track record within the areas of wind turbine and wind farm control and proven ability in modern control strategies - for example:

  • Model predictive control
  • Kalman filtering and estimation
  • Individual pitch/flap control
  • Feed-forward control
  • Experience with programming in a low-level language (Fortran, C, C++) and a scripting language (preferable Python) is an advantage.

As personal characteristics, the candidate

  • Is driven by exploring boundaries
  • Enjoy working with complex topics
  • Is motivated by both personal and team accomplishments
  • Has a focus on processes and development as much as on results
  • Strive to develop talent amongst others
