Senior Researcher in Characterization and Modelling of Thermomechanical Processing of Metals and Alloys

Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Senior Researcher in Characterization and Modelling of Metals and Alloys with focus on Thermomechanical Processing.

DTU Mechanical Engineering is contributing to research, innovation and teaching within the following areas: Solid Mechanics, Fluid Mechanics and Coastal and Maritime Engineering, Engineering Design and Product Development, Materials and Surface Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Thermal Energy. The Senior Researcher will be attached to the Manufacturing Engineering Section.

Responsibilities and tasks
The position includes fundamental and applied research, research-based education and innovation in materials science and engineering with focus on manufacturing, characterization and modelling of metals and alloys in the deformed and annealed state.

Specific tasks include:

  • Advancing materials characterization and modelling on multiple length scales through application of novel electron microscope techniques both in-situ and ex-situ supplemented with high energy X-ray analysis in 3D and 4D.
  • Advancing the understanding of structural and mechanical mechanisms which control the behaviour of metallic materials when processed thermomechanically.
  • Driving innovation of techniques for manufacturing and characterization of metal powders to be applied in additive manufacturing.
  • Designing materials with optimized properties including multilayer structures and surface layers. Focus is here on understanding the effects of the structural inhomogeneities.
  • Running research and development projects in thermomechanical processing as well as being actively involved in teaching and project supervision within the field.
  • Taking actively part in securing of external funding to the field via research and development project applications as well as more direct industrial collaboration.

The candidate is moreover expected to be actively involved in project management tasks in relation to large projects (national as well as EU) in thermomechanical processing of metals at the department.

Qualifications
Candidates must

  • Hold an MSc and a PhD degree (or equivalent) within materials science or mechanical engineering as well as have qualifications similar to those of a researcher or assistant professor.
  • Have a strong background in physical metallurgy, thermomechanical processing and structural characterization in general – including deep knowledge of the most common deformation and annealing processes in metallic materials.
  • Have substantial experience in characterizing metallic microstructures and in developing models for the structural evolution during manufacturing and operation.
  • Have good knowledge of the cross disciplinary fields of electron microscopy and advanced X-ray techniques.
  • Have good experience in running as well as managing research projects together with external collaboration partners.
  • Show a good track record of publications in leading international journals.
  • The ability to attract external funding for research projects

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • Research impact and experience, funding track record, and research vision
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Societal impact
  • Documented innovation activities, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • International impact and experience
  • Leadership potential and collaboration
