The Aerodynamic Design Section focuses on aerodynamic and aeroacoustic research based on modelling and experimental techniques. The research in the AER deals with fidelities ranging from engineering models to vortex-based and CFD models, facilitating Fluid Structure Interaction methods and multidisciplinary design. The tools and knowledge are applied in interaction with the industry in the design process focusing on new challenges or implementing new concepts. Further, the new Poul la Cour Wind Tunnel, the Rotating Test Rig and the Research Turbine are integrated into our research.

Responsibilities and tasks
Your work focuses on the development, validation and implementation of novel methods to predict the flow condition, loads and performance of blades under real operational conditions including e.g. surface roughness and vortex generators.

As a part of your daily work, you will:

  • Develop, implement and validate aerodynamic engineering models to simulate wind turbine response and performance under real operating conditions.
  • Perform and coordinate wind tunnel experiments.
  • Carry out full-scale experiments. Post-process, analyze and interpret experimental data.
  • Supervise Bachelor, Master and PhD students during their respective final projects.
  • Disseminate knowledge at national and international conferences, workshops and seminars.

You will also contribute to specific projects concerning:

  • Development of multidisciplinary design optimization tools for wind turbine blades.
  • Implementation of the existing engineering models in multidisciplinary design frameworks.
  • The use of novel design methods to design aerodynamically robust wind turbine blades.
  • Aeroelastic simulations of wind turbines.
  • Two- and three-dimensional CFD computations.

You will participate in a number of national and international research projects and contribute to the generation of new projects and manage projects. There are also good opportunities for developing innovative ideas in the direction of commercial products.

The research aims at implementation in the industry in both short and long term, and is performed in collaboration with the industry, as well as other Danish and foreign research institutions. The research will be in collaboration with other sections within the department and with other departments within DTU.

Qualifications
Candidates must

  • hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc.
  • document didactic/pedagogic training

Additionally, the applicant should have qualifications in:

  • applied aerodynamics of airfoils and blades including flow control and disturbances.
  • modelling of wind turbines with e.g. blade erosion and vortex generators.
  • wind tunnel and full scale experiments of aerodynamic effects.
  • post-processing and analysis of experimental data.
  • programming in Python.
  • generating new projects and managing existing projects, either as a project or work package leader.

Additionally, candidates would also benefit from qualifications in:

  • aeroelastic modelling of wind turbines.
  • OpenMDAO (openmdao.org).
  • programming in Matlab.
  • applied optimizations.

You should also enjoy working with people in groups of various sizes as well as be motivated by both individual and team accomplishments.
