Senior Researcher in Gelatinous Plankton and Invasion Ecology

DTU Aqua (the National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark) invites applications for a senior researcher position in the area on the role of gelatinous zooplankton and the impact of invasive gelatinous species on ecosystem functioning. The position is affiliated with the Danish Shellfish Centre (DSC) with main workplace in in Kgs. Lyngby, but it is expected that some wok is carried out in Limfjorden using DSC facilities. The position will be part of an effort to strengthen research in coastal ecology within the DSC section including effects of invasive species.

The DSC conducts research, gives advice and fosters innovation in costal ecology with focus on sustainable utilization of the resources in the coastal zone. DSC covers currently research addressing the interactions between exploitation of natural living resources and the aquatic environment, but wants to expand its activities with focus on invasive species and their interaction with the coastal environment. 

Responsibilities and tasks 
The duties of the senior researcher will primarily focus on research, including obligations with regard to publication/scientific communication/public outreach and research-based advice to public management. We expect the candidate to establish a working group around gelatinous zooplankton and global change impacts on marine ecosystems. To a smaller extent, duties will also include teaching on BEng, BSc, MSc and PhD level including supervision of PhD-candidates and Post-docs. The primary tasks will be related to a carrying a number of pre-defined topics related to a research programme on gelatinous plankton funded by the Villum-Velux foundations.

The senior researcher is expected to improve the capacity of the institute for conducting relevant research within the field, giving advice to managers of relevant authorities as well as foster innovation. The candidate is furthermore expected to be actively engaged in building up of a coastal research team based in Lyngby, but affiliated DSC and overall led by Professor Jens Kjerulf Petersen. These tasks will include developing a strategy for the coastal ecology area with focus on invasive species and participation in creating applications to both national Danish and international funding agencies.  

Qualifications 
Candidates must have a PhD degree or equivalent as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as senior researcher. The applicant should have a strong track record in working with gelatinous zooplankton and invasion ecology. Applicants with previous experience in 1) experimental plankton ecology, 2) sea going research activities with in situ experiments and 3) molecular analyses are encouraged to apply. The applicant is expected to be flexible, self-motivated and able to stimulate scientific collaboration both within DTU as well as with national and international partners. Documented external third party funding acquisition is preferred.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.
