We are looking for a research technician (laborant) for our Strain Development Department, in the Bacterial Physiology unit, Discovery function of R&D at Chr. Hansen A/S in our headquarters in Hørsholm, Denmark.

Strain Development activities are core to our product development pipeline. Being a company based on science we strive to deliver cutting edge products that arise from insights into microbial physiology and biochemistry. A key feature of the bacterial strains used in our starter cultures is robustness towards bacteriophages. We place great efforts on understanding bacteria-phage interactions and phage biology, and we capitalize on these insights to develop phage robust strains.

Hence, we seek a research technician with experience in microbiology and/or molecular biology to strengthen our activities in Phage Biology. The research technician will report to the Manager of Strain Development department.

As laboratory technician within the Bacteriophage area in the Strain Development department you will work on different tasks within phage biology and will also be directly involved in strain development activities.

The different tasks include:

  • Phage identification with common methods and development of new methods for phage identification
  • Phage purification and maintaining of the phage collection
  • Phage typing of production strains
  • Development of phage resistant starter cultures by non-GM techniques
  • Phage research focusing on bacteriophage receptors and other phage resistance related genetic features including genetic engineering tools
  • Development of lactic acid bacteria starter cultures with specific requirement to be upscaled into our product range

The personal profile:
For this position we seek a research technician with a background in microbiology, molecular biology and preferably phage biology insights.
An education as laboratory technician (laborant) is mandatory. In addition, you are/have

  • Experience in general microbiology, knowledge about bacterial physiology, strain purification, mutant isolation
  • Experience with DNA techniques: DNA isolation, PCR, cloning techniques
  • Bacteriophage techniques (if possible): phage biology, phage detection by plaque test, inhibition test, PCR, purification of phages
  • Enthusiastic towards new ideas
  • Multitasking and team oriented

Department-profile:
The Bacterial Physiology units aims at delivering top notch microbial leads to the Chr. Hansen value chain by applying a systems biology approach to generate the molecular and biochemical knowledge required to guide strain improvement strategies. The unit consists of three departments, Experimental Systems Biology, Computational Systems Biology and Strain Development and a total of 23 employees. The Strain Development department (7 members) develops improved microbial strains for commercial applications, phage-biology know-how and molecular tools for mechanistic studies.

As part of the Discovery organization in R&D we bridge academic research with new product development by improving our in-depth understanding of bacterial physiology to guide strain screening and improvement efforts.

We offer:
