Sealing specialist for marine engine design
At MAN Energy Solutions in Copenhagen we develop and design two stroke marine engines for merchant ships. The engines are built by independent engine builders in Asia based on our drawings and support. 75% of the world’s seaborne goods are transported in ships powered by our engines. Much of our current research and development resources are put into facilitating the green transition away from fossil fuels and into other fuels like ammonia and green methanol which can be produced by use of Power-to-X technology. Working at MAN Energy solutions you will play an important part in the green transition.
What am I going to do?
You will be working as a design engineer of mechanical systems with a special focus on sealing systems and sealing technology.
As our new sealing specialist you will be working cross-functionally in the company within many different departments and your main role is to be the go-to person regarding sealing systems and sealing technology. This is a new role at MAN Energy solutions and you will have the possibility to shape the job content in the direction that suits you.
We imagine that you will develop an extensive knowledge in MAN Energy Solutions about different sealing solutions (liquid and firm) and their characteristics and applicability. Examples are rubber, metal, paper, PTFE and silicone seals of various geometries for various operating conditions (dynamic or static conditions, various pressures, various temperatures, various chemical exposure).
More specifically you will:
- Be able to advise designers towards correct use of materials and build-ins.
- Optimize, develop and review new and existing sealing designs.
- Participate in trouble shooting of sealing issues in engines in service.
- Initiate necessary tests and develop test facilities.
- Bring ideas from concept, to finished design and follow it into service.
- Network with our different suppliers and find new ones.
- Handle technical correspondence with our suppliers and licensees (engine builders).
- Create and update relevant documentation.
The position is located in the Design Large Bore department making the detailed design and drawing documentation for our engines. Your work on seals will expectedly fill most of your working hours. But we want to integrate your position in the design work and methods of the design department. Therefore, we expect you to also participate in other design work as well not directly linked to sealing issues.
Who am I?
We imagine that you have a degree in mechanical engineering, material science or similar relevant higher education and an interest in working with mechanical design.
Relevant experience with sealing technology is an advantage.
The position requires that you thrive in an independent role.

Formally, your job will be positioned in the Combustion Chamber and Moving Parts group, which is a team of 12 designers with various backgrounds and educations. We are engineers, production technologists and technical designers. We have an open culture; we thrive on challenges and support each other in an environment where we take united responsibility for our designs long after they have left the drawing board and entered service. In discussions, the ceiling is high and ideas can be lifted and analyzed together in a positive and constructive atmosphere.
