Research engineers for MAN Energy Solution

We are looking for specialists to contribute in our efforts in optimising ship transportation and emission reduction from large marine two-stroke engines. Would you like to join us and get significant influence on global marine emissions?

About us
MAN Energy Solution is the market leader in development of large, high-efficient marine two-stroke engines that power most of the world’s merchant ships. The Engine Process development is responsible for the development of the emission reduction technology, the engine retrofit development, the development of the engine combustion process considering a wide range of fuels and the engine performance development.

Emission Reduction Technology (EDF4)
The Emission Reduction Technology department is responsible for the development of all emission reduction technologies from basic idea to detailed design and requirement specifications and application description. We follow our products from idea through testing and production and also into service. This is to make sure that our products are robust and superior - and to be able to make continuous improvement and to meet the challenges caused by future emission legislation for ships.

We are looking for two colleagues to contribute in our efforts in optimising our SCR systems for large marine two-stroke engines.
SCR systems - Theoretical

Your qualifications

  • Education: MSc in Chemical or Mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Specialist in SCR system development.
  • Experience in SCR catalysis and SCR dosing control.
  • High technical competence and good analytical skills.
  • Interest in lab testing and building simulations of the SCR process.
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work in groups - sometimes as the project manager and sometimes as member. You must also be able to work independently.
  • Interest in improving a complex technical product from basic idea to real life service.

Your tasks

  • Participate in the development of our SCR systems. We develop both high-pressure and low-pressure SCR systems. You will be part of a group in R&D with responsibility for SCR development. The group work in close cooperation with the rest of the house and also external business partners.
  • Lead test campaigns - both in test labs, on test engines, prototype engines at licensees and on engines in service. This includes planning, execution, evaluation and reporting.
  • Test data analysis.
  • Implement new technology in our products. This includes design specification, control algorithms and mathematical models.
  • Internal and external specialist support regarding SCR technology.
  • Cooperation with internal and external partners for developing future emission control technology.
  • Some travelling must be expected. Generally, 20-30 days per year.

SCR systems - Practical
Your qualifications

  • Education: MSc in Mechanical or Chemical engineering or equivalent.
  • SCR system development experience.
  • Knowledge of SCR catalysis and dosing control.
  • Extended engine experience.
  • High technical competence and good analytical and practical skills.
  • Experience and high interest in practical testing, assistance and follow up.
  • Thrives on having many contacts and many different tasks - sometimes on-going at the same time.
  • Good interpersonal skills and able to work in groups - sometimes as the project manager and sometimes as member. You must also be able to work independently.
  • Interest in improving a complex technical product from basic idea to real life service.

  • Development and testing of new components in SCR systems.
  • Lead test campaigns - both on test engines, prototype engines at licensees and on engines in service. This includes planning, execution, evaluation and reporting.
  • Test data analysis.
  • Implement new technology in our products. This includes design specification and certification procedures. It also includes requirement specification for external suppliers and assisting in their development and further evaluation and approval of their SCR systems.
  • Internal and external specialist support regarding SCR technology.
  • Cooperation with internal and external partners for developing future emission control technology.
  • Some travelling must be expected. Generally, 20-30 days per year.

Retrofit Development (EDF5)
Our Research and Development department “Retrofit” is looking for a talented mechanical engineer with a good theoretical knowledge and the ability to put theory into practice.
In Retrofit Development we are developing engine solutions and projects for our customers for in service vessels, considering the market demand for part-load optimization, optimized propulsion systems, multi-fuel conversions as well as the engine emission certification process.

As a member of our team in the R&D department EDF5, you will be working with inspiring and highly skilled research engineers in an open and interdisciplinary environment. You will be working with engine performance processes, latest emission reduction technologies and will have to take over the responsibility for emission-measurements, specific emission measurement equipment and emission data evaluation for retrofit application in large two-stroke diesel engines. Cross-references to given rules and codes, as well as the support of the certification process in close cooperation with classification societies are part of this task.

To a large extend you will work with emission test programs, will prepare required equipment for on-board and/or test-bed emission measurements campaigns, as well as to carry out emission measurements during a retrofit project execution on board the vessels.

Experience in both, emission measurement knowledge, as well as international cooperation with partners are very welcome and beneficial. Travelling activity of about 50-75 days / anno can be expected to support those measurement and testing campaigns.

Tasks:

  • Taking over responsibility for preparing and execution of emission validation / measurement work related to retrofit projects.
  • Support actively the continued know-how ramp-up
  • Coordination with sub-suppliers for emission measurement technology as well as with partners in Asia.
  • Interacting with other specialist in R&D and Engineering along the development projects.
  • Support the certification process and documentation required towards classification societies.

Qualifications:

  • Theoretical well founded in thermodynamics, combustion process understanding.
  • Several years experience in emission measurements, data evaluation and/or test-center is beneficial.
  • MSc in Mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate data
  • Talent and interest to transfer results into required high quality documentation for engine certification
  • Ability and interest to work in / with international teams
  • Practical and target oriented approach.
