Large Marine Diesel Engines
Design and Analysis - Combustion Chamber Parts

In our R&D department at MAN Energy Solutions we seek a research engineer, with focus on structural design of thermal and mechanically loaded components.

Our overall R&D is driven by international environmental regulations to reduce exhaust emissions and increase fuel efficiency while maintaining or increasing time between overhaul. These overall tasks are challenging the design of the combustion chamber components in respect to structural integrity and tribology performance.

The vacancy in the Combustion Chamber Parts department primarily regards the development of cylinder covers, and other heat loaded components for large two-stroke diesel process engines. The daily work is a balance between developing the engine components as such and the hardware and software tools for succeeding in doing so.

  • Component design responsibilities.
  • FEM calculations for thermally and mechanically loaded components.
  • A limited amount of CFD work mainly for application of boundary conditions for the FE models.
  • Support to engine builders (external) and design offices (internal).
  • Travel activities to engine builders, vessels and suppliers - approx 3 to 4 weeks per year.

  • The capabilities and personality traits the applicant needs to have:
  • Theoretical well founded in mechanical engineering analysis with competence in the fields of linear as well as non-linear strength analyses.
  • Knowledge of FE Methodology is mandatory, and experience even better.
  • Practical and target oriented approach to design.
  • Basic skills in fluid mechanics and knowledge of CFD will be an advantage.
