General Summary
This position works under limited supervision and is primarily responsible for projects at our global production facilities within our core competences: building, process plants, automation and production IT. This position will focus on building projects. They will also contribute vital expertise to feasibility studies and project drafts in the entire Chr. Hansen organization. The employee will be part of a local Milwaukee based team with a dotted reference to a global building department.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities (* = Essential Functions)

  • * Leads project management on building projects in Milwaukee. Manages building workstream on larger CAPEX projects. Projects will range from minor refurbishments of office and laboratories to large production facilities at new or existing sites.
  • * Responsible for actively participating in planning and execution of the project in collaboration with the Project Manager. Proactively delivers schedule, budget and risk information for their area of responsibility.
  • * Designs, sizes and tests various building projects according to food industry best practices and sanitary design. Manages external design firms/engineers/vendors/contractors to accomplish project objectives. Collaborates with internal team to align on business solution, interpreting needs into a technical solution.
  • * Proactively plans and obtains necessary regulatory and building permits for CAPEX projects.
  • * Supports Maintenance Department with technical expertise for building issues that arise over time.
  • * Demonstrates a high level of expertise in using project management tools and mentoring others.
  • Researches and develops special plans and feasibility studies (e.g. capital equipment purchases, expansion of facilities, plant layout changes, building alterations, etc.). Research may be done independently or in cooperation with external resources.
  • Follows corporate building standards and contributes actively to the spreading of these standards globally. Collaborates with other Global Engineering colleagues to develop engineering company standards.
  • Stays current with new industry developments in engineering techniques, machines, equipment, materials, etc. and incorporates the innovations in the engineering function to the best advantage of the Company.
  • Follows all Company safety and sanitation regulations and provides engineering recommendations to assist area managers in reducing or eliminating employee’s exposure to injuries or illnesses.
  • Participates and actively leads department and cross-functional teams.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Possess strong verbal and written communication skills.   
  • Team player with project and change management experience who can adapt to dynamic environment. 
  • Project management in CAPEX projects is strongly desired.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to mitigate with all levels in an organization.
  • Possess contract management skills in relation to suppliers, contractors and consultants.
  • Skilled at business problem solving, conflict resolution and influencing others.
  • Working experience with building related permits and regulatory approval processes in the US.
  • Ability to work in local and global cross-functional environment.
  • Experience and knowledge within a process-driven manufacturing environment. General food or pharmaceutical facility design with knowledge of hygienic design is required. Experience in utility and HVAC design.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Project, Excel and CAD.
  • Possess a working knowledge of other engineering disciplines to properly integrate building activities into broad projects.
  • May require travel up to 10%. Willingness to support international projects is a plus.
  • These characteristics are normally acquired through a Civil, Architectural, Construction or Structural Engineering degree (B.Sc/M.Sc) and 7 or more years of relevant experience.
  • Preferably possess a project management training certification such as PMP.

Working Conditions
Working environment is generally favorable and in an office setting. Lighting, temperature and noise levels are adequate with occasional exposure to cold temperatures. Regular entry into the production facility requires Personal Protective Equipment to be worn at all times. This includes a lab coat, hair/beard net, safety glasses, and gloves. 

Physical demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to lift and/or move materials or equipment up to 25 lbs. Frequent use of hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals.
