DTU invites applications for a position as professor in fish population dynamics and stock assessment. The professorship is affiliated with the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) as a shared position with the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources (GN). Workplace will be in Kgs. Lyngby at the main campus of DTU, but with considerable periods at GN in Nuuk, Greenland as well as participating in research cruises and activities in national and international fish stock assessment groups.

The professor is expected to lead research on population dynamics and assessments of the status and future development of commercially important fish stocks and related fisheries in Greenlandic waters, based on research survey information and data from the commercial fishery, contributing to and advising on the management of marine living resources through sustainable fisheries.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Employment requires innovative research at high international level within fish population dynamics and with a track-record in planning, implementing and running multidisciplinary research, assessment and advisory groups on national (Greenland) and international level (International Council for the Exploration of the Sea and the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation).

The professor should actively contribute to enhancing the scientific understanding of the past, present and future dynamics of ecologically and economically important fish stocks with the goal to further our capacity to predict stock dynamics and manage fisheries in the North Atlantic, considering ecological changes driven by climate change.

The research field and working area includes the following aspects

  • Research in ecology and behaviour of fish populations in Greenland waters including development and implementation of modern survey technology.
  • Investigation of key population dynamic rates, e.g. growth, mortality as well as reproductive success based on research surveys and information from the commercial fisheries.
  • Quantitative studies of climate change and other drivers of change in distribution and productivity of fish stocks utilising oceanographic monitoring data and coupled physical oceanography/climate model output.
  • Integrating standard observations on fish stock status into fisheries research programs and research findings into population dynamic models, fish stock assessments and stock predictions as well fisheries management procedures.
  • Facilitate and drive development and implementation of state-of-the-art technical and analytical methods in Greenlandic fisheries research environments, incl. guidance and supervision of younger scientists.

Results should be disseminated in peer-reviewed publications and international conferences as well as dedicated outlets aiming to inform management authorities, industry and other stakeholders as well as the public at large.

Advisory functions are mainly delivered to Greenland Institute of Natural Resources and the Government of Greenland as well as international authorities, e.g. the North East Atlantic Fisheries Organisation.

The professor is expected to contribute to teaching at different university levels, specifically to engage within the BEng in Fisheries Technology taught in Sisimiut, Greenland and other upcoming Greenlandic teaching initiatives in cooperation with the University of Greenland. Contributions are as well expected to other BSc and MSc education, and especially PhD and Post-doc supervision and mentoring tenure-track early career scientists.

You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to deliver scientific advice and teach in Danish after 2 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
