Pro-active Research Scientist in Systems Biology
We are looking for a Research Scientist with solid experience in computational biology to join the Computational Systems Biology department.

The department of Computational Systems Biology at Chr. Hansen is inviting qualified and self-motivated candidates to apply for a research scientist position to contribute to our quest for transforming ‘omics’ data into valuable assets to the company using state-of-the art bioinformatics and mathematical modeling approaches. 

The department is part of the Bacterial Physiology unit, which applies an integrated systems biology approach for generating comprehensive knowledge on Chr. Hansen’s strains and employs this knowledge to facilitate the continuous development of new leads for our commercial cultures.

Your tasks
At Computational Systems Biology, we work on implementing various constraint-based metabolic modeling frameworks that can provide useful input for strain development, culture development and/or bioprocess optimization. Your primary role will be maintaining and expanding our constraint-based modeling platform, which comprises proprietary genome-scale models as well as network reconstructions and analysis tools.

The following activities will be among your tasks

  • Identifying and implementing novel approaches for high-throughput generation of genome-scale models
  • Applying constraint-based modeling approaches for generating testable hypotheses and identifying rational strain and product development strategies 
  • Analyzing and interpreting different types of omics data in a global metabolic network context 
  • Applying microbial community modeling approaches for identifying interspecies interactions and simulating community phenotype
  • Engaging with wet lab scientists in experimental design for the generation of high-throughput omics data and hypothesis validation
  • Participating in the preparation of internal reports and scholarly articles for publications

Your personal profile
The ideal candidate holds a PhD in Systems Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Bioinformatics or equivalent combined with practical experience in genome-scale network reconstruction and analysis. Further you have:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of constraint-based modeling frameworks. Knowledge of other mechanistic modeling approaches, e.g. kinetic modeling, is advantageous
  • Advanced programming skills in Python or Matlab
  • In-depth knowledge of microbial metabolism and physiology 
  • Experience in analysis, visualization and interpretation of NGS and/or other high throughput omics
  • Documented scientific excellence in the form of high-quality publication record
  • Ability to drive your own work and generate new ideas
  • Ability to work with multiple projects and different stakeholders simultaneously
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English

About your new team
The successful candidate will join a rapidly evolving team of competent bioinformatics and systems biology scientists with great development potential. Besides Computational Systems Biology, the Bacterial Physiology Unit contains two other departments, Strain Development and Experimental Systems Biology, with a total of 28 employees. As part of the Discovery function in our R&D organization, the Bacterial Physiology Unit aims at bridging the gap between academic research and new product development through in-depth understanding of bacterial physiology and elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying desirable industrial traits.
