Do you want to develop the next generation of accurate open source interfacial flow solvers?

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a 2-year position as postdoc within numerical methods for interfacial flows, starting 1 December 2021 or soon thereafter.

We offer a unique opportunity to strengthen your research profile and become a leading expert within numerical methods for fluid dynamics and to solve long-standing scientific challenges within Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Our open source release strategy enables immediate acknowledgement and impact of your research within a wide range of engineering areas.

The postdoc is part of the research project “Numerical Methods for Interfacial Flows (InterFlow)” sponsored by Independent Research Fund Denmark. The aim of the InterFlow project is to develop accurate and efficient numerical methods improving our ability to simulate fluid flows involving complex fluid interfaces. Such simulations are used extensively in engineering and science from prediction of extreme wave loads on offshore wind turbines to the analysis of bubbly flows in chemical processing plants.

You will become part of a research group where we care for each other and collaborate actively on a daily basis. Roskilde University is located close to Copenhagen with good train connections (30 min. from CPH central station). Copenhagen is ranked as one of the world’s most livable cities. We offer freedom with responsibility, flexible office hours, and an informal and curiosity driven research team.

Responsibilities and tasks
The main theme of the postdoc will be development of novel numerical methods for simulating interfacial flows where surface tension plays an important role. A particular challenge here is to account for the surface forces in the finite volume framework where the governing equations are averaged over small finite volumes (cells) each containing a part of the fluid interface. Another challenge is to accurately calculate the curvature of the gas-liquid interfaces from the so-called volume fraction field on unstructured 3D finite volume meshes. The numerical methods developed in the project will be implemented as extension modules to the open source CFD software, OpenFOAM, and release as open source.

The postdoc is expected to actively engage in the global open source community around the OpenFOAM code. The postdoc may also engage in usage of the developed codes in basic fluid research or within engineering applications. In the latter case, emphasis will be on applications areas where our technology assists the green transition of society.

Finally, the position will include some amount of teaching.

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent within mathematics, physics or similar, with a solid background within mathematics and fluid dynamics.

Qualifications within the following scientific areas are required:

  • Experience with development of numerical methods and schemes for CFD.
  • Strong programming skills including experience with C++ and preferably with OpenFOAM coding.
  • Creativity, perseverance, team spirit and high personal integrity.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both spoken and written.

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills, be visible and involved in the department’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department.

Note that the Independent Research Fund Denmark sponsoring the Postdoc require the applicant’s PhD age” to be at most 4 years at the application deadline (The PhD age is defined here as the time elapsed from your PhD degree was officially granted minus twice the number of actual held weeks of maternity/paternity leave after that date – see definition in section 4.3.5 here).

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to:

  • quality and relevance of scientific work,
  • documented degree of match with the technical and soft skills listed under “Qualifications” above,
  • knowledge and enthusiasm about and the research subject, e.g. conveyed in the cover letter,
  • ability and willingness to contribute to the department’s internal and external collaboration,
  • overall communication skills including teaching and dissemination.

Questions
For further information about the position, please contact Associate Professor Johan Rønby Pedersen on tel. (+45) 29 93 19 23 or johan@ruc.dk.

Terms of employment
The employment is a fulltime position with 37 working hours per week and you will formally refer to Head of the Department Susanne Sørensen but on a daily basis to Associate Professor Johan Rønby Pedersen.

About the Department
Department of Science and Environment is one of four departments at Roskilde University. The Department conducts basic and applied research within mathematics, medical biology, physics, molecular biology, environmental sciences, and chemistry. Bachelor and Master programs are offered within these areas. Research and education within the fields takes place in a collaborative and interdisciplinary university environment also spanning collaboration with the other departments covering social sciences and humanities where relevant. The department is organised in four Sections comprising the research and education activities.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

Application procedure
After the deadline for applications the Dean will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.

Once the recruitment process is completed, all applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application.

Application
To apply for the position go to www.ruc.dk/en/job/

Only applications in English are accepted.

Applications must include:

  1. Cover letter - where you state your motivation for applying, qualifications in relation to the position, and intentions and visions for the position
  2. CV
  3. Documentation of education
  4. A complete list of publications
  5. A maximum of 5 relevant scientific works that you want included in the assessment
  6. If duties include teaching: Teaching portfolio (read more about teaching portfolio at Roskilde University here)

Please write in your application that you've seen the job at Jobfinder.

If any of the publications that you want included in the assessment are the result of a joint effort, the extent and the nature of your contribution to each individual work must then be clarified in a co-author statement (find template here)

Please submit your application no later than 17 October 2021.
