Expected start date and duration of employment
The position is expected to start from 1st June, 2023 or as soon as possible after that. The duration of employment is 2-years.

Project description and tasks
The goal of the project is to develop and advance the state of the art in nonstationary signal processing for temporal (time-series) and (time-varying) graph signals.

An increasing number of application areas demand the processing of large and complex data sets originating from e.g., social, sensor, biological and power networks. Graphs have emerged as a powerful framework to encode complex interactions within such data. The combination of graph formalism and traditional signal processing tools have opened up a new research field of graph signal processing (GSP), which has already delivered impressive performance gains over standard approaches in many application areas. However, further progress in the field of GSP demands new approaches that generalise standard signal processing concepts, theories and techniques to graph signals.

With this background, the main goal of the project is to accelerate the advancement of the GSP field through new approaches that extend nonstationary signal processing methods to time-varying graph signals. Specifically, the tasks in the project will include:
 

  • To develop, implement and test data-driven decomposition methods for (time-varying) graph signals;

  • To pioneer novel vertex(-time)-frequency methods for (time-varying) graph signals and validate their performance on real-life data;

  • To design time-series signal decomposition and time-frequency analysis methods using data-driven approaches;

  • Publications/presentations of the research outcomes in the top journals/conferences:

  • To develop software tools for open-source repositories and toolboxes.

Your profile
The applicant should demonstrate understanding and expertise in at least one of the following areas:

  • Signal processing

  • Graph signal processing

  • Multiscale and time-frequency methods

  • Mathematical optimization methods in signal processing

  • Statistical signal processing and learning methods

  • Sparse signal representation

A suitable applicant is expected to have a PhD degree in one of the relevant fields. It is also important that the applicant has experience of programming in Matlab, Python or similar programming languages as well as having a strong aptitude and competence in mathematics, probability and statistics. Finally, very good spoken and written English language skills are mandatory for the position.

Electrical and computer engineering are closely related technical science disciplines focusing on research into hardware and software technologies that play a vital role in defining human society, its digitalization and human behaviour. At the department of electrical and computer engineering at AU, our focus is on research and development activities in the fields of signal processing and machine learning, communication and networks, photonics, software and IT systems, medical and robot technology and electrical energy technology.

Many of our research and development activities are based on the specific innovation needs or specialist application areas of specific companies. Close collaboration with the public sector and private companies ensure that the knowledge and technology generated in the department has a clear anchoring and benefits society as a whole. We also provide research based public sector consultancy on technology in agriculture and food areas.

The department of electrical and computer engineering at AU was established on 1st January 2021 at the faculty of technical sciences at AU. At the department, we educate BEng, BSc and MSc graduates in engineering for Danish society.

Specifically, you will work at the nonstationary signal processing research group of the department. The main research interests of the group lie in pioneering fully data-driven signal decomposition and time-frequency approaches for a range of signals: temporal data, multivariate temporal data and (time-varying) graph signals. Several of our developed techniques are very high-impact finding interdisciplinary applications in diverse areas such as biomedical engineering, image processing and controls. With this background, this position will provide you an opportunity to deliver theoretical advances in signal processing as well as exploring their applications in practical areas. You will employ modern tools from statistics, optimization, linear algebra and multidimensional geometry in your work and work on real world datasets including EEG and vibration data.

Deadline
Applications must be received no later than 6th of March 2023.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Taxation and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
