Postdoc in Internet of Things Security and Privacy 1019740
The Department of Engineering, Aarhus University invites applicants for a postdoc position in the field of next generation communications infrastructure enabling IoT, 5G and Industry 4.0. The position is open for 18 months with a possibility for further extension.

The position is available from 1 April 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description/research project/research area
The Internet of Things (IoT) fuels a revolution in information technology in which smart applications such as smart homes, smart cities, healthcare, production processes, smart grids, and new space can be realized to digitize industries. Although IoT applications facilitate the digitization process itself, the reliability and privacy of information is still a key challenge.

One way to provide trust in IoT data is through a distributed service trusted by members of a network that guarantees that the data remains immutable. Blockchain technology address this aspect by offering a solution to the data reliability problem. It enables distributed peer-to-peer networks where non-trusting members can interact in a verifiable manner without a trusted intermediary. Blockchain is bringing immutability and creating trustless networks through cryptography. Examples of services that benefit from blockchain include automated workflows, transactions, tamper-free logging, and permissions-based access.

This postdoctoral project addresses the challenges of the providing trustworthy IoT solutions with blockchain. It involves technologies as distributed databases, cryptography, networks, and protocols. Applications include tamper-free logging and data sharing where access to data is incentivized by using cryptocurrency concepts.

The tasks undertaken by the postdoctoral fellow include the following:

  • Selection of a practical and relevant research problems linked to industrial innovation.
  • Construction of models and theories for trustless IoT networks and applications.
  • Implementation of the proposed models to facilitate practical applications of blockchain.
  • Evaluation through experiments and analysis.
  • Contributions to a common project demonstrator.
  • Communication of research results to the scientific community.

The qualified candidate will have the opportunity to participate in teaching and curriculum development relation to the main research topic. The postdoctoral fellowship for position is funded by Innovation Fund Denmark and Aarhus University.

The project includes industrial collaboration with local SME companies. Research activities of the project are linked to the Center for Digitalization, Big Data and Analytics at Aarhus University (AU DIGIT). Experimental activities will be carried out in the Networks and Analytics Laboratory (NANLab) at the Electrical and Computer Engineering section.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or similar.

Required qualifications:

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Programming experience
  • Experience with network security
  • Experience with scientific publication
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent English skills both oral and in writing

About the Electrical and Computer Engineering Section
Electrical and computer engineering are closely related engineering disciplines that focus on the development of hardware and software for intelligent units and networks. This includes hardware at system and component levels as well as many different types of software for controlling electronic devices and networks.

The research areas within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Section at Department of Engineering support the development within this area. The outcome greatly influences our daily lives as advanced technologies are incorporated into an increasing number of products, for example in industrial processes, at hospitals and in information infrastructures.

The Networks and Analytics (NAN) group is focused on research and innovation in next generation computer networks and data analytics aiming at distributed, networked systems that rely on secure and efficient communication.

The place of work is åbogade 34, 8200 Aarhus N, Denmark, and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments.

Further information about the position may be obtained from / For further information please contact: Associate professor Rune Hylsberg Jacobsen, phone: +45 4189 3252, email: rhj@eng.au.dk.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.
