PostDoc in Environmental and climate governance

The Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) at Aarhus University, Roskilde, Denmark invites applications for a position as Post Doc in policy analysis and local governance related to environment, energy and climate. The position is for 1,5 years starting as soon as possible subject to mutual agreement.
 
Description of the position

The post doc will take part in EU funded research projects related to local governance systems in sustainability transitions. This includes transition of local energy systems based on renewables, but also more broadly transition if cities by urban governance and adaptive approaches with citizens and stakeholders.
The candidate is expected to contribute to this research, including   

• Contributions to development of research frameworks
• Independently plan and conduct data collection at the local level in multiple European countries
• Take lead on and contribute to publications in international peer-reviewed journals
• Cooperate with international research partners
• Popular presentation of research findings

The candidate will also have the opportunity of taking part of teaching tasks, mainly courses in governance for participants with a natural scientific background.

Qualification requirements

The ideal candidate holds a PhD degree within the social sciences (political science, sociology or related fields) and has conducted and published research on local governance.
Moreover, the candidate has:

• strong methodological skills, particularly in qualitative and comparative methods.
•  strong communication skills, both written and oral 
• proficiency in English, written and spoken
• demonstrated ability to publish in international journals
• ability to develop and implement research ideas
• ability to cooperate with others in an international research team
• ability to manage own research activities and meet deadlines

The Department of Environmental Science

The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research is conducted related to some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution
and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 150 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. of Copenhagen.
The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Environmental Social Science and Geography research unit. The unit employs approximately 25 staff, focusing on interdisciplinary analysis of the interlinkages between the environment and society from political science, economics and sociology perspectives. The strategic foci of the unit include environmental policy development, regulation and instruments, understanding of actions and actors in policy formulation and implementation, spatial integrated modelling as well as policies and economics of ecosystem services. The results from the research are used for dissemination to the research community, in advisory services to decision makers as well as for teaching..

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
