The Department of Engineering at Aarhus University, invites applications for a 2-year postdoc position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project in the field of distributed cloud storage and network coding.

You will be actively involved in pioneering research within coding theory, distributed systems, and future cloud storage technologies to cope with the massive amount of data generated by the Internet of Things and other BigData applications. You are expected to develop new solutions and disseminate them in top-level venues as well as help to train PhD students from the group. You will also actively reach out to industry to transfer our technology (in part via interactions with the IETF/IRTF), help acquire new projects based on this work and new directions resulting from it, and engage in patent applications.

There is funding for 2 years of employment. In case of further external funding is procured within the academic area the candidate is estimated obviously qualified for, an extension can be possible for up to a total maximum of 4 years of employment as a postdoc.

The position is available from 1st of January 2018 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description
The position focuses on the development of novel coding theory designs for a more efficient storage of data. In particular, the applicant will consider the integration of network coding techniques and data deduplication, two approaches for reducing storage costs that have been typically attacked separately. This work is expected to open a new field at the intersection of traditional coding theory and distributed storage systems. The underlying goal of the results and designs of this project is to develop new technologies for Cloud, Edge, and Local content management and storage. The applicant is expected to deploy such designs in practical systems to demonstrate the results. The applicant is also expected to participate in the preparation of research project proposals at a national and international level.

Our group operates at the intersection of theory and implementation of network coding, distributed systems, and Cloud/Edge technologies. For this reason, we encourage applicants with a strong theoretical profile or a strong implementation/programming profile (or ideally both) to apply. Our group also counts with a new and well-funded laboratory to deploy large storage servers pods (hundreds of TB each pod), computing servers, ARM micro-servers for energy efficient edge operations, and a number of end-user devices, single-board computers and sensors. The candidate will have an opportunity to shape the lab development efforts into the future.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or similar, with a strong publication track record in fields relevant to the position.

The ideal applicant will have:

  • A solid background in distributed systems, networking, data deduplication and/or network coding theory.
  • Implementation, programming (C++, Python, or similar) and/or experimental skills are desired.
  • The ability and willingness to explore fundamental limits of network coding theory in the context of distributed storage and content management.
  • The ability to work with experts from a broad range of scientific and technology backgrounds.
  • Publication experience and dissemination experience in relevant journals and conferences in the field.
  • Teaching experience (a plus, but not required).
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills in English.

Application procedure
Short-listing is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, - the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.
