Postdoc with background in Chemistry and Experience in Gas-Analysis and/or Catalytic Reactor Chemistry

Do you want to be part of an innovative new green energy project paving the way for next generation green energy solutions?

The position involves employment at DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Section of Materials and Surface Engineering with work-location at Gas-Lab at Elplatek A/S in Horsens, Jutland, where you will be part of a close cooperation with important industrial and international partners and pioneers in the Renewable Energy sector.

The central research field of the project is within the renewable energy sector. The project-team is looking for a candidate to optimize state-of-the-art modularized catalytic gas reactor system. The overall aim of the project is to develop and test a proof-of-concept gas-installation involving gas cleaning, upgrading of CO2 to CH4 and reforming of biogas and subsequent catalytic gas-synthesis to produce methanol (gas for liquid fuel).

Detailed chemical analysis of the gases by GC/MS will be a central element of the position.

Responsibilities and tasks
As mentioned above, the objective of project-phase 1 is to develop, build and test a system for optimization of a reforming process of biogas and subsequent methanol synthesis enabling renewable energy storage and sustainable fuel production.

Along with the task of designing and building the gas-system in collaboration with your colleagues in the Gas-Lab and our international project-partners, you will essentially be in charge of:

  • Conducting experiments on the developed process of combining steam reforming and dry reforming of biogas in one step called bio-reforming
  • The end-goal is to convert all CH4, CO2 and H2 to form an optimal stoichiometric ratio of CO and H2 (called syngas) to be used in the subsequent methanol synthesis.
  • Implementation of an innovative ‘dead-end’ reactor design concept in the methanol synthetization process
  • Validation of the process in cooperation with our international partners
  • Your main responsibility in this regard will be to perform detailed chemical analysis of the produced gases using GC-MS in order to verify and validate the functionality and feasibility of the lab-system.

The outcome of the introductory phase 1 will be used to design and further upscale a bio-reforming methanol reactor system in phase 2 that involves a demonstration-plant capable of converting 10 Nm3 biogas with the addition of 3.5 Nm3 hydrogen into 18 L methanol per hour.

This project offers the possibility for the right candidate to work in the very heart of Renewable Energy research with state-of-the-art technology in a very innovative international project team.

There will be a close collaboration with important Industrial players and international researchers, some of which are true pioneers within the Renewable Energy sector. This job position will thus provide the candidate with an exceptional possibility to make a priceless contribution to the arguably most relevant of research areas with a potential of making a lasting imprint on the imperative journey towards a sustainable society. The position is based in an open-minded, informal and flexible working environment amidst enthusiastic colleagues in a small and determined group of result-driven people with high work ethics and integrity.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a PhD degree or equivalent preferably within chemical engineering or relevant fields.

Furthermore, you

  • Have relevant experience with qualitative and quantitative analysis of gases - theoretically and practically - and in particular experience with the use of GC/MS techniques would be highly beneficial
  • Possess knowledge and insight regarding catalytic gas reactions, processes and thermodynamics. Preferably experience in design of gas flow system
  • Have practical skills are expected with the ability of building up experimental gas flow and reactor systems
  • Are self-motivated and persistent - determined to reach specified goals
  • Are good at taking initiative and follow through on tasks
  • Have holistic approach - making sure a solution is all-round applicable in a system
  • Feel comfortable with working in a small group having a multitude of different tasks on hand simultaneously
  • Have excellent communication skills - conveying knowledge and experience
  • Are open and direct - asking straight questions, giving straight answers
  • Are flexible and open-minded - Adaptive and innovative mindset
  • Are motivated by both individual and team accomplishments
  • Thrive on collaboration and teamwork

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

The initial employment - in phase 1 of the project - is defined as a 12-months position. However another 2 years of funding is expected for the next project phase, if the current project - as expected - meets the specified goals.

This project is managed by DTU Professor Per Møller, DTU-MEK, Lyngby and it is funded by EUDP.

You will be employed by DTU Mechanical Engineering however most work is to be carried out on the premises of the project partner Elplatek A/S in Horsens, Jutland, where a well-equipped Gas Laboratory has been established during previous successful sustainable gas projects under the management of Professor Per Møller.

Temporary accommodation will be available in an apartment in Horsens. Some travel activities are likely to occur, as some project partners are located in the US.
