PostDoc in Applied Environmental Economics

The Department of Environmental Science (ENVS) at Aarhus University, Roskilde, Denmark invites applications for a position as Post Doc in applied environmental economics. The position is for 2 years starting as soon as possible subject to mutual agreement.

Description of the position

Research
By 2030 investments in Nature-Based Solutions will need to at least triple in real terms if the world is to meet its climate change, biodiversity, and land degradation targets. However for this to happen, it is necessary to further increase our understanding of the multiple benefits and roles of Nature-Based Solutions, to raise awareness of their value and to demonstrate the potential of investment pathways in Nature-Based Solutions. The Invest4Nature is a new Horizon Europe funded project that aims to gain a better understanding of the economic and financial performance of NBS, considering their role for mitigation as well as climate risk reduction, to promote upscaling and investments in NBS, and to accelerate market uptake.

The selected candidate will be part of the economics team at ENVS and will collaborate with international partners from across Europe in the Invest4Nature consortium to conduct and validate a diagnostic of cost and benefit categories for Nature-Based Solutions across landscapes. The candidate will also be involved in collecting and synthesizing knowledge and evidence on the financial and economic performance of Nature-Based Solutions.
The selected candidate is expected to:

• Conduct a diagnostic of benefits and costs relevant to Nature-Based Solutions in urban, coastal and rural landscapes
• Contribute to expanding the Total Economic Valuation framework
• Collect and synthesize knowledge and evidence on financial and economic performance of Nature-Based Solutions
• Collaborate and engage proactively with city authorities and other international partners
• Contribute to and lead on written output (reports & papers)

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to exchange knowledge with various sectors of society outside the university, and to contribute actively to the general public debate in areas related to the position.

Qualification requirements
The position requires experience within the field of applied environmental and/or ecological economics and integrated economic and natural scientific research. The ideal candidate therefore has experience in integrating social and natural science approaches, is skilled in performing quantitative analyses, and has a proven ability to develop methodological approaches in relation to environmental economic analyses. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have good communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating in international teams and engaging with different types of stakeholders (companies, municipalities, research institutions, NGOs).
Applicants should have completed a PhD in the field of applied environmental economics or similar and have a proven track-record of publications in high-level international peer-reviewed journals.
The candidate is expected to be highly motivated, enthusiastic about working in an interdisciplinary academic environment and comfortable working in teams.

The Department of Environmental Science
The Department of Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary department under the Faculty of Science & Technology at Aarhus University. The expertise ranges from physics, chemistry, microbiology and mathematical modelling to social science, geography, economics and policy analysis. Both basic and applied research is conducted related to some of the major challenges facing society, such as pollution
and pollution control mechanisms, management of land, soil, water, air and biodiversity, protection of ecosystem services, climate change, and energy systems. Advisory services within these areas are offered to ministries and other stakeholders. Currently, about 150 staff and PhD-students are working at the department. of Copenhagen.

The selected candidate will be affiliated with the Environmental Social Science and Geography research unit. The unit employs approximately 25 staff, focusing on interdisciplinary analysis of the interlinkages between the environment and society from political science, economics and sociology perspectives. The strategic foci of the unit include environmental policy development, regulation and instruments, understanding of actions and actors in policy formulation and implementation, spatial integrated modelling as well as policies and economics of ecosystem services. The results from the research are used for dissemination to the research community, in advisory services to decision makers as well as for teaching. Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
