The Section for Electrochemistry at DTU Energy invites applications for a PhD scholarship in electrochemical reactor engineering and materials science for redox flow batteries. This research project is part of an externally supported project which brings together researchers and staff from universities in Denmark (DTU, Aarhus University) and abroad (KIST, South Korea) and two companies (Danish Power Systems, VisBlue) in Denmark.

The research in the Section of Electrochemistry spans fundamental to applied aspects of electrochemistry and electrochemical engineering with a focus on materials and processes in electrochemical energy technologies such as fuel cells, electrolysers, and redox flow batteries. We develop new materials, components, and devices for electrochemical energy technologies in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners nationally as well as internationally.

Cost and sustainability are key drivers for development of new technical solutions for large-scale energy storage, something that is rapidly becoming more important with the steep increase in installed, and strongly intermittent, wind and solar power generation capacity connected to our power grids. Redox Flow Batteries (RFBs) are due to their independently scalable power (stack size) and energy (tank size) ratings, along with their decreasing levelized cost of storage with longer discharge times, particularly attractive for storage of energy from intermittent energy sources at scales ranging from residential applications (kWh) to massive grid-scale storage (MWh - GWh) installations.

Responsibilities and tasks 
The successful candidate will conduct a research project in the area of electrochemical reactor engineering with a focus on membranes and electrodes for redox flow battery reactors. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the external project partners, the Section for Electrochemical Materials, and will be linked to other ongoing projects in the area of redox flow batteries and electrolysis.

  • You will be responsible for the daily progress of your research project.
  • As part of the PhD education, you will follow courses and assist in teaching activities
  • You will engage in collaboration with other groups in academia and industry.
  • You will disseminate your work in international peer reviewed journals and at professional conferences.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree, preferably in chemistry, physics, materials, or energy science/engineering.

We are looking for a candidate who:

  • has strong competences in electrochemistry/electrochemical engineering/electrochemical methods
  • has experience with synthesis and/or characterization of ion-exchange membranes
  • has a strong interest in energy conversion and storage technologies
  • is innovative and able to work in cross-disciplinary teams
  • has excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken
  • can work independently and take responsibility for the progress and quality of projects

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
