PhD position in 3D Printing of Functional Materials

We are seeking an energetic PhD student, who will realise novel materials, facilitating novel sustainable energy technologies.

Additive manufacturing or 3D printing is becoming increasingly used as a fabrication tool. The ability to fabricate intricate parts with a high resolution allows realisation of complex designs at a relatively low cost. Adding functionality to the printed parts would open up new possibilities of designing and building novel devices with a wide range of functionality. Functionality can be achieved by mixing a functional material into the polymer filament, before printing.

The specific type of functionality to be researched in this project is adding and controlling local magnetic properties of printed parts. The design of permanent magnet structures capable of delivering custom magnetic field profiles is an area where DTU Energy has a long standing expertise. Being able to build custom pieces of magnetic material would open up new possibilities in this area. Also, the ability to print soft magnetic materials with controllable properties would allow for improved magnet designs, as well as be included in novel cooling and energy harvesting technologies.

Responsibilities and tasks
The main task of this three year PhD position is to develop the technology of 3D printing functional materials. This will include preparation of polymer filaments, loaded with the desired functional materials, and methods for realising the desired designs. Tasks will also include subsequent characterisation of the printed parts, to compare the functionality with that predicted by numerical models.

Qualifications
Qualified applicants must have:

  • Master degree in engineering, chemistry, physics or similar.
  • Experience with experimental lab work and/or device design and construction.
  • Preferably, experience with some kind of 3D printing.
  • Preferably, experience with polymers.
  • Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamic group.
  • Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
