Applications are invited for a PhD fellowship/scholarship at Graduate School of Science and Technology, Aarhus University, Denmark, within the Engineering programme. The position is available from 1 May 2020 or later.

Title:
Mitigation of climate footprint and environmental impact of welfare pens for sows and piglets

Research area and project description:
The aim of this fellowship is to develop and validate a novel manure management system with improved animal welfare for loose lactating sows. The system will be designed to improve 1) the climate footprint (mainly methane emission), 2) the environmental impact of ammonia emission and 3) the odour nuisance in local surroundings. The research activities contribute to a larger project that also addresses improved animal welfare for sows and piglets, including indoor environment. A specially designed flux chamber will be developed in order to investigate the influence of different designs, materials, and ventilation and manure management strategies on the emissions from the manure system. The flux chamber will be combined with state of the art gas measuring instruments (Cavity Ring Down Spectroscopy and Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry). The manure system will be validated in a state of the art livestock emission facility at AU-Foulum with full-scale pens for sows.

A key part of the study is to develop a low-emission manure system for loose lactating sows based on the following research elements: 1) surface properties of materials for slurry channels to lower adhesion and thereby emissions from surfaces, 2) fundamental investigations of factors affecting emissions from slurry and surfaces in pig houses (e.g. reduced slurry surface area, soiling on the solid floor, slurry discharge frequency) and 3) design of a pit ventilation system that can be integrated in the low-emission manure system.

Qualifications and specific competences:
The successful applicant must have a Master’s degree in engineering, animal science or biology that ideally includes coursework in environmental engineering or livestock production systems. Experience in analytical chemistry, laboratory work and data analysis is an advantage.

Analytical and critical thinking are essential for pursuing a PhD degree. Further requirements are fluency in English, good reporting/organization skills and being able to work independently.

Place of employment and place of work:
The place of employment is Aarhus University, and the place of work will be in the Department of Engineering, Section of Biological and Chemical Engineering at Finlandsgade 12, 8200 Aarhus N, Denmark.
