The Mads Clausen Institute at the University of Southern Denmark has a vacant position as an associate professor in nanoscale material characterization at the university campus in Sonderborg, to be filled by 1 January 2019 or as soon as possible.

In Soenderborg, the university has established NanoSYD as a strategic focus center of the Mads Clausen Institute. NanoSYD focuses on nano- and microtechnology with special emphasis on device fabrication.

We are looking for a specialist in the characterization and nanostructuring of materials, including metals, semiconductors and organic thin films. The research activities are mainly related to novel materials for nanophotonics and optoelectronics. A close cooperation with other research activities at the institute and a focus on industrial collaboration is expected. 

Main tasks affiliated to the position are:

  • Advancement of the current analysis and nanostructuring techniques
  • Teaching of engineering-related disciplines at both bachelor and master level within relevant engineering programs
  • Active involvement in research and industrial collaborations

Requirements and qualifications

  • PhD degree in Physics or Engineering
  • Documented experience with research dissemination in scientific journals and on conferences
  • Good communication skills in English
  • Teaching and supervision experience
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as a team player with researchers from different disciplines

The following qualifications are preferred

  • Expertise in electron beam and Helium ion beam microscopy
  • Experience in optical characterization of organic thin films and devices
  • Expertise in nanofabrication
  • Experience in teaching of relevant subjects
  • Experience in writing research applications
  • Experience in cross-border and interdisciplinary research projects

Since the associate professorship includes teaching duties, a convincing teaching record at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels as a pedagogical training or similar is mandatory.

Requirements for the position
Employment as an associate professor requires scientific qualifications at PhD level.

Applications will be assessed by an expert committee. 
The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material. Applicants will be informed of their assessment by the Faculty.
 
Shortlisting may be used. Shortlisted applicants will be assessed by an assessment panel.
 
As part of the overall assessment of the applicant’s qualifications, the applicant may be called for interview.

Conditions of employment
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

If the successful applicant does not have documented teaching experience which corresponds to associate professor level the applicant can be employed on trial for the first 18 months.
