We want to provide intelligent insight in the cardiovascular and muscular system simultaneously and in real-time, by using an intelligent wearable system.

Background
Ohmatex started as a R&D consultancy company with a unique ability to integrate electronics into textiles. We are considered a pioneer within the fast-growing market of smart wearables. Our distinct focus enables us to be a leading player in servicing demand for new technologies, ever smaller devices, and new ways of monitoring body performance.

Since its inception Ohmatex has been involved in a multitude of R&D projects on behalf of government and privately financed institutions. These projects have led to a build-up of extensive knowhow and Ohmatex is now ready to fully commit to a product development strategy.

The development of the muscle performance monitoring solution (MPM) is based on technologies Ohmatex developed for European Space Agency (ESA). Clinical validation, happened at Dipartimento di Scienze e Tecnologie Biomediche, University of L’Aquila

Our focus
Today, it is a complex task to obtain and combine NIRS (near infrared spectroscopy), EMG (electromyography)  and accelerometer monitoring data. Data collections are currently mostly performed in training labs as part of momentary snapshots of performance. It is often a very time consuming and expensive task. Most often, todays systems are large, bulky and unable to be used in a normal training setting. A single wearable monitoring system that collects data in real time, will thus be of great value to athletes and trainers, both before, during and after exercise.

We have developed a wearable system and integrated it in normal training clothing (running inner tights and cycling pants as well as socks). The system automatically synchronizes the data and store it on the device and it can in real-time be monitored on a smart watch, cycle computer or smart phone. The NIRS monitor will typically be placed on the front of the upper leg or on the calf. The EMG system will be able to monitor 3 muscle zones; Front and back on upper leg and butt.

1. NIRS (near infrared spectroscopy):
An optical technology, which utilizes the absorption of light sent into muscles. It is a non-invasive method used to calculate the tissue oxygenation level and the changes in the hemoglobin chromophores. This is different than pulse-oximetry as we look directly into the muscle.

2. EMG (electromyography) recording:
A technique for measuring the electrical activity produced by skeletal muscles. EMG signals detect the activation levels of muscles.

3. Motion capturing & temperature
Accelerometer, gyroscope, measuring proper acceleration and position and sensors to measure skin temperature

The system can easily be synchronized with other monitoring tools such as GPS, WATT and PULSE

Questions for inspiration

  • How is raw physiological data, that previously mostly have been collected in lab and research setting, best presented to a user without a physiological education, before, during and after training/exercise?
  • How can these data be used in relation to Performance, Motivation or Health?
