The TRIOS 3D inter-oral scanner can create 20 3D RGB-D images pr. second. These images are fused together into a combined model live during scanning. One key component of the scanning algorithm is to be able to identify where an incoming image should be fused. Our primary method to solve this problem is to use the well-known ICP algorithm, but that requires us to be able to provide a reasonable start guess of where the image is in 3D space. This problem can be solved by calculating feature descriptors for an incoming image and finding corresponding features on the scan model. The goal of this project is to calculate surface descriptors that can be used to identify regions of a 3D scan. In this project a method for finding robust descriptors should be proposed and implemented, and it should be verified that it gives good results on scan data from the TRIOS scanner. Relevant propositions could include deep- learning techniques and/or classical image analysis techniques such as SURF descriptors.
The project will last approximately 5 to 6 months and should be conducted as your master thesis project. You can write it alone or in groups. You should be a master student enrolled in the Computer Science, Software Development or other relevant programs. We expect from you to have a relevant knowledge and experience in the following fields:
- Good knowledge of Linear Algebra
- Attended courses in 3D Computer Graphics
- Attended courses in image analysis
