About the position / Who are we looking for
The department of Computational Systems Biology at Chr. Hansen is inviting qualified and highly motivated candidates to apply for a research scientist position to contribute to our quest for transforming ‘omics’ data into valuable assets to the company using state-of-the art bioinformatics and mathematical modeling approaches. The department is part of the Bacterial Physiology unit, which applies an integrated systems biology approach for generating comprehensive knowledge on Chr. Hansen’s strains and employs this knowledge to facilitate the continuous development of new leads for our commercial cultures.

Your Tasks:
Your primary role will be the processing, analysis and interpretation of different types of omics data for achieving systems-level understanding of the mechanisms underlying key functionalities in industrially relevant microorganisms with potential benefits to plant and animal health. The ultimate goal is to generate testable hypotheses and identify rational strain and product development strategies.

The following activities will be among your tasks

  • Analysis, visualization and interpretation of high throughput omics data (e.g., genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics and proteomics)
  • Applying genome mining and comparative genomics approaches for identifying the genetic determinants of beneficial traits in our strains
  • Applying and optimizing different approaches for omics data integration
  • Engaging with wet lab scientists in experimental design for the generation of high-throughput omics data and hypothesis validation
  • Participating in the preparation of internal reports and scholarly articles for publications

Your Personal Profile:

  • PhD in Systems Biology, Biochemical Engineering, Bioinformatics or equivalent
  • Advanced skills in analysis, visualization and interpretation of NGS and other high throughput omics data backed up by sloid knowledge of statistics. Knowledge of machine learning algorithms will be advantageous
  • Advanced programming skills in R, Python, Matlab or equivalent
  • In-depth knowledge of microbial metabolism and physiology
  • Knowledge of constraint-based metabolic modeling frameworks
  • Documented scientific excellence in the form of high quality publication record
  • Ability to drive your own work and generate new ideas
  • A keen eye for details without compromising efficiency
  • Ability to work with multiple projects and different stakeholders simultaneously
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English 

About the department
The successful candidate will get the opportunity to join a rapidly evolving team of competent bioinformatics and systems biology scientists with great development potential. Besides Computational Systems Biology, the Bacterial Physiology Unit contains two other departments, Strain Development and Experimental Systems Biology, with a total of 23 employees. As part of the Discovery function in our R&D organization, the Bacterial Physiology Unit aims at bridging the gap between academic research and new product development through in-depth understanding of bacterial physiology and elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying desirable industrial traits.
