DTU Management Engineering invites applications for a position as Head of Smart Mobility Center.

The vision of the Smart Mobility Center (SMC) is to become a national and international hub for research and innovation in Smart Mobility, hosted by DTU. It primarily aggregates a community of researchers from all across DTU, that have been working on the several angles of Smart Mobility, including autonomous and shared mobility, transport prediction and optimization, transport modelling, electrical mobility, fail-safety, security and privacy. Being strongly inspired by the Transportation@MIT initiative, the SMC has the particular role of breaking the cross-departmental barriers, and become a collaboration space, essentially in the multidisciplinary field of Transportation. The current set of departments involved is Management Engineering, Computer Science, Space, and Electrical Engineering.

To achieve this vision, the SMC strategy is grouped into 3 fronts:

  • Internal synergies - There is tremendous potential yet to explore within DTU alone, in terms of joint projects, co-supervisions, seminars and workshops. Establishing collaboration with Skylab and the Centre for Transport Analytics and strengthening integration with other Transport DTU initiatives, EV Lab, Autonomous Systems Initiative, etc. is required. The ultimate goal is to create a cohesive network, of committed researchers and excited students.

  • Danish and Scandinavian network - We can establish ourselves much more strongly in the regional context. Denmark is a particularly dynamic and forward looking country with respect to mobility and technology, and triple helix opportunities abound. There are plenty of private and public funding opportunities. The SMC has all the chances to thrive in such a context. Moreover, SMC will explore collaboration with other academic partners in Denmark and in other Scandinavian countries (e.g. Chalmers, KTH, NTNU).

  • International outreach - The SMC already comes from a strong international profile. It was born from previous experiences at MIT, and a stronghold would be to consolidate the DTU-MIT collaboration. In addition to strengthen our networks across Europe, America and Asia. Conquering new EU (e.g. H2020, Marie Curie, EiT KIC) and non-EU (e.g. Didi projects in China, NSF in USA, NRF in Singapore) level opportunities, requires well designed efforts and smart partnerships (e.g. with ERTICO, BDVA, EuroTech Alliance, Nordic five tech etc.).

Job description
The Head of Smart Mobility Center has primarily the responsibility of implementing the vision described above. This requires pro-active attitude and creativity. The vision is itself a dynamic process, and the Head of Smart Mobility Center will be invited to participate and revise it, in an ambitious fashion.

The daily life in this role will include aspects like:

  • Networking initiatives (on an individual or group/workshop basis, based in Denmark, or abroad)
  • Brainstorming for new projects, together with researchers and external partners
  • Organizing/proposing new funding initiatives (e.g. H2020)
  • Coordinating with SMC researchers, and CTA and Transport DTU management groups
  • Leading or Co-leading innovation projects
  • Leading the revision of the image of SMC (e.g. website)
  • Being involved in research project and public sector support

The Head of Smart Mobility Center is also welcomed to participate in DTU teaching activities, such as co-teaching the course “42183 Innovation Projects for Mobility in the Smart City” together with the main teacher, co-supervising research, and publishing papers.

The Head of Smart Mobility Center will report to the group leader of the Machine Learning for Mobility group, which is a group in the Transport Modelling division of DTU Management Engineering.

Qualifications
A successful applicant will have the following characteristics:

  • A Ph.D.-degree related to the scope of SMC
  • Interest in working in a research and innovation environment
  • A good Danish and European network, and willingness to expand it
  • Strong knowledge of new mobility technologies (e.g. autonomous, electrical, V2X, MaaS,…) and their possibilities
  • General (not necessarily technical) knowledge of data sciences, artificial intelligence, V2V communication, sensor networks, and their potential
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent team management/leadership skills
