Department of Energy Conversion and Storage (DTU Energy) at Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a Head of Section position on low-temperature electrochemistry. DTU Energy has a major focus on the green transition, focusing on the development of materials, components, devices, and systems for new and improved sustainable energy technologies for energy conversion and storage.

Responsibilities and qualifications
As our new Head of Section, you will head one of our seven scientific sections. Furthermore, we have three support teams. You will be among about 250 inspiring colleagues in the department, located centrally at DTU Lyngby Campus. One of our important values is cooperation, and we believe that we reach world-class results together.

Your management role is of outmost importance and therefore you are an empathetic role model when you foster a nurturing environment of inclusion and openness. We aim to educate the best engineers, and you must be recognized as a very good and inspiring people and scientific manager. We strive for a decent work-life balance. The sections are competence centers, and together, and cross-disciplinarily, we develop fuels cells, electrolysis and Power-to-X, batteries, thermal energy storage, energy harvesting and storage and more.

Your new section on low-temperature electrochemistry (LTE) has about 25 scientific members with senior scientists, professors, and a large number PhDs and postdocs. The research in LTE spans from fundamental and applied aspects of electrochemistry to electrochemical engineering. In LTE new materials and processes for the use in flow batteries, electrolysis and fuel cells, electrochemical reactors for carbon capture, storage and use, organic solar cells and organic electrosynthesis for power-to-x. The main research interests of the section are:

  • Advanced synthesis of inorganic and organic electrochemical materials such as electrocatalysts, membranes, catholytes, and anolytes
  • Organic electrochemistry, electrochemical cycling and synthesis, reaction monitoring and optimization of organic conversions
  • Electrocatalysis for hydrogen production, CO2 utilization and conversion of small organic molecules
  • Development of operando characterization techniques for electrocatalytic reactions
  • Design of components, cells and reactors optimizing mass, power, and heat management
  • Performance and lifetime assessment of materials, components and cells

You are a qualified scientist at a senior research level, and with similar research activities. One research area could be on the manufacturing of organic materials and electrochemical components for electrolysis, fuel cells, solar cells and other energy conversion devices. Another could be on electrochemical characterization and a third could be on organic electrochemistry.

As our new Head of Section, you will strengthen the department’s competences related to low temperature electrochemistry for use for electrolysis, fuel cells, batteries, solar cells, or carbon capture. We have various processing tools in-house, and more can come when needed. We have a range of electrochemical characterization set-ups, and more techniques at the department and at DTU as such. You are innovative and able to implement ideas and collaborate across disciplines. You have demonstrated high-quality research and management. Dissemination of the research an important responsibility.

As a senior researcher an important task is to attract external funding from public and private sources, and to deliver excellent results. You will take part in the supervision of PhD, MSc, and BSc students, and of young scientists. You will contribute significantly to DTU Energy’s vision of demonstrating cross-disciplinary world-leading research to enable a sustainable society through innovative technology development and you will take advantage of close collaboration with colleagues within the department and at other DTU departments.

You have the will and competences to lead and manage a large group of scientists, ranging from PhDs to professors, to be able to coach and develop an international scientific team, and to be a fruitful part of the whole management team at the department.

You have demonstrated top-level and original scientific research in electrochemical materials and processing, and in at least one of the Department’s main research areas, such as electrolysis, fuel cells, batteries, or solar cells. You must demonstrate proven and successful management of research groups, and be part of winning teams of large research projects, including successful results and management. Successful collaboration with industry is also a prerequisite. Experience in supervision of young scientists should be listed.

You must contribute to teaching at the Department. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As a formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding a position as a researcher or postdoc. To be appointed as a senior researcher, you must have completed a didactic/pedagogic education. If you do not have the necessary education, then it is possible to complete this requirement within a period of two years of appointment.

You will be assessed against the responsibilities and qualifications stated above and the following general criteria:

  • Research experience
  • Experience and quality of teaching
  • Research vision and potential
  • International impact and experience
  • Societal impact
  • Innovativeness, including commercialization and collaboration with industry
  • Leadership, collaboration, and interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication skills

You will undergo personal tests and feed-back, as well as an evaluation for a senior research position by an international evaluation board

We offer
We have an open environment, we listen, and we appreciate dialogue for providing different input and creating the best solutions. As part of our management group your therefore will have a strong opportunity to impact how we move forward.

DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation, and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment.
