Fermentation scientist for upscaling of bacterial cultures

The R&D Process Upscaling department is looking for a skilled and enthusiastic scientist to develop production processes for new bacterial cultures within bioprotection, plant-, animal- and human health as well as dairy, meat and wine applications. Upscaling is a central team within R&D and Process Development in Hørsholm and consists of scientists and PhD students. The core expertise lies within development of fermentation processes and transfer from lab and pilot plant scales to industrial scale production. As we are selling active and live bacteria, we deliver robust processes based on experimental set-up with focus on both upstream and downstream processing and ensuring stable cultures. The processes we develop are implemented in Chr. Hansen’s culture plants globally. We are a crucial part of New Product Development projects and see ourselves as the interface between the business and production, ensuring that requirements from all stakeholders are met.

As fermentation scientist in Upscaling you will

• Scale up bacterial cultures for new product development projects within all business areas by applying scientific and engineering principles and practices
• Apply statistical tools such as Design of Experiment and Multivariate Data Analysis to ensure delivery of high product yield and optimal performance
• Apply innovative approaches and technologies to achieve application goals and to challenge the status quo
• Take part in the implementation of designed processes in our culture plants
• Drive cross-functional activities and collaborate with external industrial and academic partners
• Take responsibility for process equipment in our excellent lab facilities, making sure they are always up-to-date
• Take part in setting the digital agenda in R&D Process Development with focus on exploring new digital opportunities

The ideal candidate

• Holds a MSc or PhD degree in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Microbial Physiology, Chemical Engineering or related scientific field
• Has extensive experience in microbial fermentation of bacteria – preferably within lactic acid bacteria or strict anaerobes
• Has experience with process development or production within pharma or microbiome
• Has knowhow of bioprocessing, including aseptic techniques, separation techniques, downstream processes and process scale-up
• Understands the principles of the underlying technical functionalities of fermentation equipment
• Is experienced in working with statistical tools for Design of Experiment and Multivariate Data Analysis and in programming languages used in statistical computing such as R or Python

You have the ability to work independently, you are proactive and find it natural to challenge existing procedures and processes. As you can expect to work on several projects in parallel, it is important that you can navigate in an environment with various projects and stakeholders, and that you can drive and execute on projects with short deadlines and diverse deliverables aligned with the strategic goals of Chr. Hansen. Finally, as English is the corporate language of Chr. Hansen, you need to be fluent in English, both orally and in writing.
