The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) opens a 4 year full time position for an experienced scientist to work with monitoring of sea ice from passive microwave satellites to support our remote sensing activities.

DMI is a leading European developer and producer of remote sensing products, including sea ice concentration and emissivity products for the Polar Oceans based upon microwave observations. The satellite based sea ice monitoring is critical for understanding the effects of climate change on the Arctic and Antarctica sea ice cover and are important inputs to weather and ocean models.

Your main work will be to work with the development of retrievals of global sea ice concentration and sea ice emissivity from passive microwave observations at DMI. In addition, you will participate in the work with the retrieval of sea surface and sea ice surface temperature observed from infrared satellites and snow and ice thickness retrieval from satellite observations. You will participate in the development of new satellite missions in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and EUMETSAT.

Most of the work is carried out in the EUMETSAT project: Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility (OSI SAF), but you will also work on other projects funded by ESA, the European commission and the Danish National Center for Climate Research. You will work in close collaboration with dedicated and highly qualified scientists colleagues in the remote sensing group and colleagues from other institutions across Europe.

You will participate in leading the improvements of the global sea ice concentration algorithms, analyzing satellite data sets, writing peer reviewed publications and representing DMI in new research projects and in international organizations.

Main working tasks

  • Work on sea ice research projects and initiate new project applications.
  • Develop and maintain the operational retrievals of sea ice products within the EUMETSAT OSI SAF project.
  • Participate in the analysis of global sea ice concentration data sets for the Polar Regions.
  • Work on developing observational operators for sea ice.
  • Represent DMI within the international sea ice community through participation in international collaborations and contribute to new satellite missions.
  • Ensure an increased uptake of the satellite products in DMIs ocean-sea ice and atmosphere models.

Qualifications/Experience

  • Recognized sea ice scientist with a large network, good communication skills and a scientific publication list.
  • Experience with the retrieval of sea ice concentration from passive microwave observations
  • Experience with microwave sea ice emissivity and radiative transfer models
  • PhD degree in geophysics, engineering or similar within the field of remote sensing of sea ice
  • Advanced programming skills in e.g. Python (preferrable), Fortran or Matlab.
  • Experience with Linux and operational applications
  • Good skills in oral and written English.
  • Can work well in a team in close collaboration with your colleagues.

The position is in the Danish National Centre for Climate Research (NCKF) at DMI, which employs approximately 50 scientists of which 18 are located in the Satellites and Arctic unit. We have a strong international profile which is also reflected in the many nationalities here and in an English "working language".

Employment and salary
Employment and salary will be according to the Danish Law and Agreements. DMI offers a flexible working week of 37 hours including a paid lunch break, and six weeks of paid vacation annually. If you come from abroad, there is a possibility for a reduced tax scheme the first 7 years (see https://skat.dk/skat.aspx?oid=2244911).

For further details about the position, contact the head of the remote sensing group: Jacob L. Høyer (telephone: +45 39 15 72 03 or by e-mail: jlh@dmi.dk).

The DMI wants to contribute to equal opportunities for women and men, and encourage all qualified persons to apply regardless of age, gender or ethnic background.
