Experienced Geophysicist position at the Geophysical Department at GEUS

If you are experienced and interested in a career, working with numerical methods for improved reservoir characterisation and (re)processing of seismic data both related to consultancy work and support of research, a position at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) might be of interest to you.

Job description
You will be an integrated part of a scientific working environment where your skills within extraction of detailed information from integrated use of seismic data and well data information for reservoir characterization is a key qualification. Emphasis is also placed on experience in application of seismic forward modelling for consistent evaluation of reservoir models towards seismic response. Another important focus area is on processing of newly acquired seismic surveys and reprocessing of older seismic data as this is fundamental input in energy projects both national and international.

Projects in particular related to reservoir characterization and seismic evaluation of reservoir characterization models are not only related to consultancy work, but in many cases also related to important research. The position offers both possibilities for consultancy work and support of scientific work.

Seismic modelling, inversion, and AVO studies is an important part of the characterization and quantification of reservoirs properties. For the coming years GEUS is part of a reservoir characterization study at the Danish Hydrocarbon and Technology Center (DHRTC). The study includes detailed 2D and 3D seismic data analysis and interpretation, correlated with reservoir properties from well logs and core samples in order to define key reservoir characteristics. The project uses modern seismic software such as ProMAX, MatLab, Hampson-Russell, Petrel, and Decision Space for evaluation and interpretation of seismic data.

GEUS is furthermore involved in exploration and utilisation of deep geothermal resources in the Danish subsurface, both as consultancy work and as part of larger research projects with international partners. Focus is on reducing exploration risks and optimising pre-drill site selections, by using seismic data and rock physic methodologies from well log data to predict reservoir properties based on seismic inversion models. Participating in acquisition and quality control of new geothermal seismic surveys may also be part of the geophysical tasks.

Your qualifications
The appointment will be made based on your qualifications and in particular emphasis is placed on the following qualifications:

  • A relevant M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Geophysics or Geology
  • Documented experience within methods for numerical reservoir characterization and seismic data processing
  • Research experience

In addition, good knowledge of seismic software tools such as ProMAX, MatLab, Hampson-Russell, Petrel, and Decision Space is preferred
Special consideration will be given to the applicant who has the ability to be an efficient team worker, and who has good communication skills. It is essential that the applicant is able to participate in both research and consultant projects, why experience in fundraising and good network within the energy industry will be an advantage. The applicant must be fluent in English (read and write). If the applicant does not master Danish, the applicant must be prepared to learn Danish to an appropriate level within the first 12 months of employment.

Department of Geophysics
The division is primarily engaged in solving geological tasks within the program areas: energy resources, nature and environment. Activities includes participation in research projects (both national and international), mapping and exploring the use of state agencies and contract assignments especially for both oil and geothermal companies. The department's professional staff are involved in projects which is multi-disciplinary in approach. A number of advanced modeling and mapping tools are used in connection with exploration tasks (e.g. basin modeling and reservoir simulation), mapping of reservoirs, etc. The department consists of 30 experienced and dedicated people of high internationally recognized standard, working with a broad range of geological subjects in relation to the deeper underground.

We offer

  • A creative and interdisciplinary research environment
  • A lively and informal working environment with talented and dedicated colleagues
  • Versatile work duties and good opportunities to influence them
  • Development opportunities with access to courses and other further education
  • Family friendly workplace with flextime
  • An active social environment, with a staff association and art society
  • Fitness centre with physiotherapy at the workplace

Salary and conditions of employment
The salary will depend on qualifications in accordance with the collective agreements between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the relevant eligible trade union.

The appointment area is the Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate and its institutions.

The Danish Ministry of Energy, Utilities and Climate considers diversity to be an asset and invites anybody interested, regardless of gender, age, religion or ethnicity to apply for the position.
