Option 1: Quality Engineering internship
Put your analytical engineering skills to the test in the Quality Engineering (Wing Assembly) or Quality Engineering (Final Assembly) department at Lockheed Martin. In this position you will get the chance to conduct big data processing, discover trends, uncover root causes and create solutions to reduce rework hours and defects – all with the goal to reduce the price of the aircraft. You will also get the opportunity to do lab experiments to obtain statistical data on solutions.

You will work with quality improvement projects together with Quality Engineers and build statistical analysis tools to produce actionable data used to drive results. During this internship you will either support the Wing or Mate/Final Assembly build areas and are additionally going to work on program level quality projects.

In this internship position you will cover responsibilities within the following:

  • Complete process capability and performance analysis to identify potential sources of variation.
  • Devise and implement methods and procedures for inspecting, testing and evaluating production processes.
  • Make data more accessible with the use of programming and analytical skills.
  • Assist with audits in manufacturing build areas.
  • Specialize in the areas of design, product evaluation and reliability, and/or research and development as they apply to product or process quality.
  • Brief senior leadership on the status and results of their projects.

The location for this internship is Fort Worth, Texas.

Option 2: Quality Technologies internship
Quality Technology (QualTech) is a multidisciplinary department that investigates how to apply new innovative technology to quality assurance aiming at reducing inspection time, cost and effectiveness. Examples include the development of drones (aerial, snakes, crawlers) that can inspect aircraft for defects using machine learning, 3D-printing of tools and much more.

Previous interns in this position have produced “proof of concept” drones, utilizing rapid prototyping and imagination, in order to assist the department in assessing whether an idea is worth pursuing further or not.

In collaboration with Application Engineers, you will cover the following responsibilities:

  • Research and analyze manufacturing issues, constraints, or cost drivers in current Lockheed Martin Aeronautics manufacturing and inspection processes.
  • Identify, develop, and initiate process improvements to reduce process variation and increase process stability.
  • Perform project management functions (budget and schedule management, status reporting, cost benefit analysis, etc.) for both government-funded and internally-funded technology projects.
  • Provide technical status reporting and troubleshooting to build areas for technical projects.
  • Support throughout a project’s lifecycle, from research and development, business case analysis, system design, procurement, to test, integration and support.

The technical work will be based on the skills you bring, which can be within the following disciplines: Artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, software and hardware engineering, data science, manufacturing engineering, statistical analysis, and systems engineering.

When it comes to software programs and systems you can expect the following ones to be represented: CATIA, MatLab, Python, Arduino, Pixy, Raspberry Pi, C++, iOS and Unix.

Your desired skills for this position may include a selection of:

  • Convolutional neutral network experience.
  • Strong programming and mathematical capabilities.
  • Root cause analysis experience or training.
  • 3D printing and/or prototyping experience.
  • Automation programming experience.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

The location for this internship is Fort Worth, Texas.

Option 3: Production Continuous Improvement internship
You will work with quality and continuous improvement projects in a cross functional team. In this position you will either support the Wing or Sub-Assembly build areas and you can expect to get the opportunity to work on program level quality projects.

In this internship position you will cover responsibilities within the following:

  • Complete process capability and performance analysis to identify potential sources of variation.
  • Devise and implement methods and procedures for improving, testing and evaluating production processes.
  • Make data more accessible with the use of programming and analytical skills.
  • Assist with audits in manufacturing build areas.
  • Specialize in the areas of design, product evaluation and reliability, and/or research and development as they apply to product or process quality.
  • Be knowledgeable of lean and six-sigma methodologies.
  • Brief senior leadership on the status and results of their projects.
