The Hearing Systems Section at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) offers a position at the level of associate or assistant professor within the area of multi-sensory (e.g., audio-visual) speech perception or multi-sensory signal processing for hearing technology. Hearing Systems is part of the department of Health Technology. Our research is concerned with auditory signal processing and perception, speech communication, audiology, behavioural and objective measures of auditory function, computational auditory neuroscience, environmental acoustics, and hearing-instrument signal processing.

The multi-disciplinary research conducted by the Hearing Systems Section is done in collaboration with several European networks, Danish hospitals, and with industry. The goal of the research is to increase our understanding of how the human auditory system functions and to provide insights that are useful for technical applications, such as hearing aids, speech recognition systems, hearing diagnostics, cochlear implants and virtual reality applications. Specifically, the research field of the position will be focused on exploring people’s speech communication challenges in adverse acoustic conditions with multiple interfering sources, as well novel strategies of intervention for people with hearing loss. The research will be connected to the activities at the Centre for Applied Hearing Research (CAHR), thereby giving unique opportunities for collaboration with the hearing-aid industry.

The assistant professor position is part of DTU’s Tenure Track program. We provide you with the best conditions including a mentor, state-of-the-art research infrastructure, teacher training and relevant networks. After maximum 6 years you will be evaluated by an external assessment committee, and if evaluated positively, you will acquire a permanent associate professor position.

Responsibilities and tasks
The candidate will contribute to teaching activities in the group, mostly at MSc level and focus on the international MSc program ‘Engineering Acoustics’ that is offered jointly with the Acoustic Technology Section at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a solid scientific knowledge and research experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Multi-sensory (e.g., audio-visual) speech perception and recognition in complex acoustic environments, including, but not limited to, communication and interaction in dynamic scenes; sensor-based measures of listener behaviour; impact of hearing loss and aided hearing; and perception in virtual/augmented reality.
  • Multi-sensory signal processing for hearing technology, including, but not limited to, computational multi-sensory learning, artificial-intelligence-based signal processing, multi-sensory human-computer interfaces; audio-visual speech enhancement; and audio-visual scene analysis.

We expect the successful candidate to participate in both fundamental and advanced-level education of students, in cooperation with the other scientific staff, and to contribute actively to the theoretical and experimental research within the Department.

The applicant must document qualifications addressing the responsibilities and tasks. In addition, candidates for an

assistant professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
associate professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent), as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training

Tenure Track at DTU – Assistant Professor position
DTU offers talented scientists from around the world attractive career perspectives via the DTU Tenure Track Programme. Highly qualified candidates are appointed as assistant professors for a period of up to six years with the prospect of performance-based advancement to a tenured associate professor position.

As part of the tenure track position, the candidate receives:

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
