The Department of Management Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark is looking for an enthusiastic and talented candidate for a full-time position as Assistant or Associate professor in the area of supply chain and operations management. We focus on planning, innovation, and management from an engineering perspective. Our aim is to develop theory, methods, and tools that can support private and public organizations in dealing with increasing demands on e.g. competitiveness, productivity and sustainability.

You will be part of the Management Science (MS) division, internationally recognised as a leading MS division. MS is an internationally unique academic environment spanning from operations research and operations management to management of human factors and performance in implementation processes.

The available position will be part of the Operations Management (OM) group, which focuses on effective planning of resources and activities in production, services, and transportation companies spanning from strategic to the operational level. Attention is given to quantitative methods such as simulation theory, mathematical optimisation, and the use of information technology. Qualitative methodologies such as process optimisation are employed to support research within efficient planning and management across the supply chain. The research targets a broad spectrum of industrial and service sectors including manufacturing, services, transportation, and health care. The recent focus on digitalization, analytics, and Industry 4.0 further strengthens the group’s efforts in applying quantitative as well as qualitative methods to improve decision support across the entire supply chain. We enjoy a very strong and successful collaboration with leading industrial players in Danish industry within the area of manufacturing and production.

The research scope of the position falls within supply chain and operations management and includes but is not limited to the following domains:

  • Planning and scheduling in production and services
  • Healthcare Operations Management
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Transport and logistics

Both a quantitative and a qualitative methodology background is relevant.

Responsibilities and tasks
The successful candidate will be involved in further developing application-oriented research and education within supply chain and operations management.

  • You will be required to conduct research within supply chain and operations management at a high international level
  • You will be expected to publish your research in internationally leading scientific journals
  • We expect you to actively engage in our current and future Industry 4.0 initiatives. These initiatives will be performed in close collaboration with relevant stakeholders in both academia and industry.
  • We expect you to be active in seeking and obtaining external funding for research and innovation activities.

The division contributes to a wide range of bachelor and MSc programs. The majority of our teaching is concentrated on MSc level activities, but also includes courses on the bachelor level. Our teaching deals with most aspects relevant to Operations Management within the Industrial Engineering setting. Your educational responsibilities will to the extent possible be related to the research focus area, however, flexibility is required. In specific, the OM group educational activities are directed towards the BSc programmes in Mechanical Enginering and Strategic Analysis & System Design and towards the MSc programmes in Industrial Engineering and Management, Transport & Logistics and the forthcoming programme in Business Analytics.

Please note that the expected teaching on bachelor level is required to be in Danish, and on MSc level, it is required to be in English. For international candidates, DTU offers Danish language courses, with the purpose of being able to teach in Danish within the first two-three years.

  • You will become responsible for classroom teaching, lecturing, and examination.
  • You should actively participate in attracting and supervising bachelor and MSc students.

For the Associate Professorship:

  • You will be responsible for the (co-)supervision of PhD students and will have administrative duties.

Qualifications
Candidates for an

  • Assistant Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
  • Associate Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.  

The successful candidate should have a strong background in either quantitative or qualitative methods relevant to supply chain and operations management. Relevant quantitative methods include operations research based methods such as mathematical programming, metaheuristics and simulation theory but also methods from machine learning, data science and/or data analytics. Relevant qualitative methods include (but is not limited to); process optimisation, production architecture and modern manufacturing philosophies such as lean manufacturing.

A strong interest in teaching and supervision is of utmost importance for the successful candidate. Thus, you should

  • enjoy teaching and supervision of students on both the bachelor and the MSc levels
  • engage your students in your research and innovation activities to support our focus on research-based teaching and education
  • be interested in adapting new didactic methods to the benefit of improving learning out of the students (including e-learning, blended learning, flipped classroom etc.)
  • be motivated by exploring the possibilities in implementing your teaching taking advantages of modern philosophies such as problem-based learning

Knowledge sharing and cross functionality are highly valued in the MS division. Thus, we expect you to cooperate and be eager to build relations with colleagues at the department and with other departments of DTU. These include but are not limited to DTU Mechanical Engineering and DTU Compute (department for applied mathematics and computer science).

Also, in order to support our industrial collaboration you should be willing to interact and initiate projects with partners from our network.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union.

The Assistant professor position is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an Assistant professor can be promoted to an Associate professor position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
