An Associate Professor position is available at the Department of Biotechnology and Biomedicine, Technical University of Denmark with a focus on developing, applying single-cell genomics approaches to Stem cell Biology.

The position will be placed in the section of Protein Science and Biotherapeutics with about 100 staff members. The section performs high-impact research and innovation aiming at harnessing the biotechnological, genomics, diagnostic and therapeutic potential of proteins and signalling molecules and is heavily supported by an in-house proteomics core facility. The section also teaches Bachelor and Master students in biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology and immunology and has extensive international and national collaborations with top academic institutions as well as industrial and clinical partners. 

Responsibilities and qualifications
The successful candidate is expected to direct an internationally competitive multi-disciplinary research group focusing on development of both computational and experimental single-cell methods, aimed at genomic investigation of fundamental molecular mechanisms in developmental biology, using stem cell models. In addition, there will need to be emphasis on relevant disease models and potential translational impact. Multidisciplinary candidates with past work on computational big data analysis in relevant areas would be preferred. Moreover, candidates will need to highlight a clear vision with regards research collaborations and contributions to ongoing activities in the department.

The Associate Professor is expected to also collaborate with other department faculty members to make further development of the engineering educations within our biochemistry, immunology and pharma technology activities, by developing and supporting new pedagogical teaching elements and by integration of new research activities into the curriculum of the existing and planned study programs at the bachelor, master and PhD level.

The research activities are expected to link to other relevant engineering areas in the department, and the new associate professor is expected to engage in collaborative projects with groups in the department and relevant DTU departments (e.g. DTU Health, DTU Chemistry, DTU Food, DTU Biosustain). The aim will be to complement existing competences at DTU and create synergies with state-of-the-art methodologies for biomarker identification and studies of biological complexity at single-cell level resolution, thereby advancing existing research agendas and creating new ones.

Candidates should have obtained well-documented international recognition within one or more of the above mentioned research themes. It is required that the candidate has documented experience as an independently capable researcher within genomics, single-cell biology, stem cell research and has extensive experience in both computational and experimental research. It is also an advantage if the candidate has a strong national and international network as well as experience in working with private companies. Additionally, success in having obtained previous funding is mandatory. Given the significant amounts of data that will need to be generated and processed, a clear computational background is desirable. More specifically, the candidate is expected to strengthen activities within the following areas:

  • Establish and lead their research in area of single-cell genomics and stem cell biology
  • Conduct externally funded research of the highest international standard
  • Publish research outcomes through international peer-reviewed publications
  • Establish and develop new single-cell technologies, computational pipelines and workflows
  • Support departmental and collaborative activities in areas of computational biology and big-data analysis
  • Supervise of Postdocs, PhDs, Masters and Bachelors students as well as contribute to teaching activities.
  • Be involved in the section’s joint research activities and contribute through community engagement and public outreach programmes.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. You will be expected to learn Danish and be able to teach in Danish after 3 years. DTU can provide Danish language courses.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an assistant professorship and documented didactic/pedagogic training.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The salary for the position will be determined by the applicant’s qualifications and in agreement with the relevant union.
