Associate Professor in Modelling of Urban Water Networks - Process Modelling and Control of Urban Water Systems

The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a part-time position as Associate Professor in modelling of urban water networks, with emphasis on process modelling and control of urban water systems.

Responsibilities and tasks
The associate professor shall strengthen the department’s research on urban water systems with a view to industrial research/innovation and contribute to creating a new research/innovation area within the UWS section dealing with integration of process models, on-line measurements, control of urban water systems and uncertainty assessment. Relevant research areas include:

  • Extension of water quality process modelling approaches to urban drainage networks, with the perspective of further developing integrated water quality models including stormwater, wastewater and water supply models and the relevant treatment options
  • Further development of real time control approaches targeting water-quality based control in all the elements of the urban water system
  • Development of methods for testing the quality and elaborating information conveyed by on-line sensors, which are increasingly installed and operated in all the elements of the urban water cycle, from water supply down to stormwater and wastewater treatment operation.

This position has natural links to research activities taking place at the Water Technology and Water Resources Engineering sections. Furthermore, the position will focus on creating new research links with other DTU departments and international leading research institutions, as well as on establishing/strengthening research /innovation collaborations with industrial partners.

The position will intensify teaching activities in the area of process models and environmental monitoring, increase the use of e-learning tools within the section and the department, and contribute to further developing a growing portfolio of courses in the area of urban drainage.

The associate professor is expected to lecture at the bachelor, master and PhD level, and contribute to development of B.Eng. and continued education activities on urban drainage and climate change adaptation. Lecturing is conducted in collaboration with other faculty members.

Furthermore, the candidate is expected to provide mentoring and co-supervision of graduate students, to collaborate with the other sections of the department, other DTU departments, industry and other external stakeholders, and to facilitate wider knowledge exchange with society at large.

A commitment to collaborate with the faculty and staff of the Department is essential.

Qualifications
Candidates must

  • hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship
  • document didactic/pedagogic training 

The working language is English, but for the sake of teaching at the undergraduate level (BEng and BSc), applicants must be able to communicate also in Danish (or another Scandinavian language).
Candidates who do not speak Danish should be willing to learn Danish within the first two-three years in order to be able to teach in Danish.

The candidate must meet the following criteria for appointment, taking into account his/her career stage:

  • Documented and successful teaching (including development, planning and evaluation of courses), and experience in project supervision
  • Original scientific output at a high international level
  • Research leadership and ability to attract and manage funding from national and international sources
