The University has an ambitious strategy to increase its activities within research and education in the engineering sciences. The vision is to bring AU into the global elite of technical universities. The University therefore seeks exceptionally innovative and visionary engineering researchers to be part of this build-up and to strengthen and develop Biological and Chemical Engineering at Aarhus University.

The position is available from November 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering
Within Chemical Engineering, the BCE Department has strong research sections in Environmental Engineering and Materials & Process Engineering. Close collaboration with our neighbouring Departments (Mechanical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Molecular Biology & Genetics, iNano, Biosciences, Food, Agroecology and Chemistry) is a natural part of our culture. The successful applicant will be working with Chemical Engineering and will produce and disseminate knowledge and research results. Translation of results into solving relevant societal challenges is a highly prioritized part of our work.

Working area
The position will support the strategic agenda of the university by extending the current range of strong competences in Chemical Engineering. Possible topics for the position are all related to Catalysis Engineering, and the research solve both fundamental and applied research topics related to the green transition and sustainability of our economies. It can include, but is not restricted to the following areas:

  • Power-to-X
  • CO2 activation and conversion
  • Catalytic conversion of bio materials

Besides new catalysts, the research can include novel reactor design, catalytic processes and/or upscaling and characterisation of catalysts on larger scale. It is paramount that the candidate has a extended experience with implementation of research into industrial applications. Ability to relate research to achievement of UN sustainability goals will be emphasized as well.

The position will to a start be anchored in the section for Process & Materials Engineering, and the candidate is expected to work closely with other researchers/groups within the department as well as with external stakeholders. The ability to work in a multidisciplinary team is essential. PtX and carbon utilization are growth areas. The candidate should preferably have experience with managing growing organisations.

The candidates must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. The candidate is expected to have extended experience with industrial research and development, and must document experience with research and technology development on higher TRL levels 3-7. Direct industrial R&D experience from employment in a research intensive company is considered highly positive. Candidates must, relative to their academic career stage, have a strong record of research accomplishment, a record of sustained external funding, with concomitant nationally or internationally recognized leadership in their field. Output from industrial research must be significant and, if not published in scientific journals, documented otherwise.

The candidate is expected to be able to drive the build-up of internationally competitive research activities, and contribute to strengthening the current research activities. Commitment to excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including existing courses and development of new courses, is expected.

Further expectations for the level of appointment is:

Associate professor: Candidates must have a strong academic background, documented successful grant writing and experience with project management, industrial/public sector collaboration, as well as teaching and supervision experience.

Place of employment and place of work
The position includes two permanent workplace addresses in Aarhus and Tjele respectively. The attendance at each workplace address is by agreement with your immediate supervisor. At the time of employment, the distribution between the workplace addresses is expected to be 3 days with place of employment in Aarhus and 2 days with place of employment in Tjele, or by further agreement. In Aarhus the place of work is Åbogade 40, 8200 Aarhus N. In Tjele the place of work is AU Campus Foulum, Burrehøjvej, 8830 Tjele. The area of employment is Aarhus University with affiliated institutions.
