The Department of Civil Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Associate Professor in Building Design within the Building Design Section.

The position will be a part of the Section’s research, innovation, teaching and scientific advice. Research and teaching within the Section for Building Design includes structural as well as architectural aspects in an overall assessment of a building.

Responsibilities and tasks
The associate professor will have his/her primary responsibilities in research and in research-based teaching.

The overall subject of research, teaching, and innovation of the section is the technology
needed for designing buildings with emphasis on important and innovative areas while cooperating with the more specialized sections at the department. A holistic approach is deliberately applied, identifying and focusing on the most important technical problems for the design to be solved by research, leading to a fast track for implementation of the results.

The section deals with research on what is needed for holistic design and retrofitting of buildings with respect to simultaneous fulfilment of functional requirements such as load-bearing capacity, energy preservation and heat insulation, indoor climate, fire safety, acoustics, architectural expression and buildability.

The candidate for the present position should have a generic research approach, where the focus is on both the design theories, design management and the initial design stages where major decisions are made throughout the design process.

Research in building design should at least include the following aspects:

  • Buildability
  • Building Information Modelling
  • Collaborative efforts
  • Life Cycle Assessment
  • Life Cycle Cost
  • Operability
  • Sustainability
  • Usable

Moreover, the successful candidate is expected to engage heavily in fundraising activities targeted towards this field of research.

Teaching must be conducted in both Danish and English and at bachelor’s (BSc & BEng) and master’s (MSc) level. Candidates who do not speak Danish should be willing to learn Danish within the first two-three years in order to be able to teach in Danish.

The position will include supervision of bachelor and master theses. Teaching will take place at Lyngby Campus and Ballerup Campus.

The field of building design is highly multi-disciplinary. Therefore, research and teaching is carried out in cooperation with colleagues in the section as well as scientific staff from e.g. Indoor Climate & Building Physics and Structural Engineering, DTU Management as well as external partners in the industry.

Other content of the position:
Responsibilities related to PhD and Postdoc supervision, research project management, and academic departmental work.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.

Applicants must possess and document strong qualifications in research demonstrated through publications and citations in international scientific journals, and through successful collaborations and projects. Moreover, applicants must document a vision for their contribution to future research in the field of building design.

The candidate should have experience within managed design projects, knowledge on design theories, buildability and building information modelling. The candidate can have a background as engineer or architect.

Applicants should document their interest, qualifications, and experience (if any) in research-based university teaching.
