Are you interested in providing novel statistical/mathematical solutions for analysing big complex data and addressing some of the world’s largest health problems including antimicrobial resistance?

A position as an associate professor is available at National Food Institute (DTU Food) in the Research Group for Genomic Epidemiology. The successful applicant is expected to interact closely with other departments at DTU, including DTU Compute.

We offer a position as associate professor. The position is affiliated with a responsibility for developing and expanding a novel research area within the group where novel mathematical /statistical methods for analysing and understanding big and complex data should be developed and used. This will include integrating data generated from complete sequencing of environmental and clinical samples, with large scale explanatory variables; e.g. abundances of 10s of millions of genes with 1,000s of explanatory variables.

Responsibilities and tasks
In microbiome, metagenomics, infectious disease and antimicrobial resistance research we are today generating terabytes of data, where following bioinformatics processing we may have abundance profiles for 10s or even 100s of millions of unique genes. The abundance of each gene might be linked to other genes and also explained by several 1,000s of environmental factors, including host, climate, trade, travel, treatment, feed, etc. These data have to be analysed based on a very limited number of measurements. There is a growing need to provide novel statistical analysis of such data, including predictive modelling.

The successful candidate will have a primary responsibility for developing this research area in the group and bridge the already existing expertise in bioinformatics and epidemiology with novel statistical and mathematical modelling.

The tasks will be conducted in close collaboration with DTU Compute and DTU Bioinformatics.

The assessment of the candidates will involve scientists from all three departments and the successful candidate will be expected to interact closely with scientists and teachers across the departments.

Other content of the position, include:

  • Exchanging knowledge with society, including participation in the public debate and advisory service
  • Research management
  • Some teaching, including e-Learning
  • Guidance and supervision of PhDs and Post docs
  • Academic assessment work

Qualifications
Candidates for an Associate Professorship must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent) as well as academic qualifications equivalent to those obtained by holding an Assistant Professorship and should document didactic/pedagogic training.

Further qualifications:

  • Expertise in statistics and/or mathematics
  • Ability to think “out of the box”.
  • You are driven by exploring boundaries
  • You enjoy working with complex topics
  • You are motivated by both personal and team accomplishments
  • You thrive on collaboration and teamwork
  • You have a focus on processes and development as much as on results
  • You believe in dialogue and feedback as the best foundation for sound decision making
  • You understand that reflection and personal development is vital to innovation
  • You strive to develop talent amongst others
