The Royal Danish Defence College is advertising an academic position (Assistant or Associate Professor) in military technology, innovation and digitization. The position is at the Institute for Military Technology – a department that is interdisciplinary in scope and has a keen interest in Science and Technology Studies.

The RDDC is looking to enhance its research capacity within military technology and innovation as well as the digitization of the battlefield. We therefore open up a new Assistant- or Associate Professor position at the RDDC’s Institute for Military Technology (IMT). The position entails conducting research on technological transformation, innovation and digitization of the military organization, and teaching Danish officers at bachelor- and master levels to enhance their understanding of military opportunities and risks associated with new technologies and the digitization of the battlespace.

Om os
IMT educates current and future military decision-makers on how technology impacts future military operations and how to navigate opportunities and risks associated herewith. The institute’s work takes place in a cross-disciplinary environment, comprising civilian and military faculty members. Our researchers mostly have social- and political science backgrounds, but we are currently looking to expand into more technical issues related to IMT’s overall research- and teaching portfolio. At IMT, we do research and development, we teach, and we advise the Danish Armed Forces’ decision-makers on military-tech matters related to operations, strategy, international law, leadership, and the cyber domain.

Our cross-disciplinary team of scholars and our proximity to the operational part of the Danish Armed Forces create unique opportunities. In a field of study characterized by high speed of development and great policy relevance, our proximity and access to the Danish Armed Forces enable exciting opportunities for hands-on research and education projects. In addition, IMT has extensive domestic and international networks within universities, the defense industry, and the Armed Forces in general, including NATO’s Science and Technology Organization.

Like the other departments within the RDDC, IMT is located at Svanemøllen Barracks in Copenhagen. The campus-like setting offers a stimulating research and teaching environment in military fields like leadership, operations, war studies, and strategy. The core curricula of IMT has received full accreditation, and we offer courses from bachelor to master levels.

We have a flat organizational structure with an emphasis on teamwork. We see each other as colleagues and peers, encouraging professional sparring and mutual inspiration. The work environment is informal, and we all strive to produce quality work on time for our domestic and international stakeholders.

Om stillingen
You are an established researcher looking to enhance your research portfolio within the field of military technology and/or the digitization of the battlefield. You have documented qualifications in and experience with teaching as well as an interest in teaching Danish officers and decision-makers to enhance their understanding of emerging and disruptive technologies (EDTs) and the military opportunities and risks associated with the datafication and digitization of the military organization.

You have a research publication record commensurate with the level applied to and a strong interest in building a further profile in science and technology studies, military studies and/or digitization and data studies. We are open to candidates with a background in social sciences (e.g. technology and data in a STS or strategic/security studies context), organization studies (leadership and organizational challenges connected with cultural transformation and implementation of technology, data and information security), humanities (e.g. innovation and digitization in the context of technology history, information-, communication- or cultural studies), or IT studies with an organizational element. It is an advantage but not a requirement to have knowledge of and interest in technological innovation, digital cultures and insights in critical security studies or military design thinking. Research will be applied in teaching of courses on technology understanding and management and on technological aspects of military force development and the future battlefield, targeted at Armed Forces personnel posted domestically and abroad.

The position is split between teaching and research, with added tasks related to institute and faculty administration. Sufficient time to produce independent, original research within the position’s topic is, however, highly prioritized.

The position furthermore requires that you build and maintain domestic and international networks within Defence institutions (e.g. NATO Science- and Technology Studies), the industry and academia, in order to cooperate with relevant research institutions as well as defence-industry stakeholders within and outside of Denmark.

Om dig
You have a PhD in social sciences (including political science, anthropology, STS or other social sciences including IT-related studies) or in the humanities (including history, communication, information or cultural studies), and you want to enhance your research profile.

You are fascinated by the opportunities offered by future technology in the military organization and how new technologies such as drones, AI and big data will transform the network-centric battlespace of the future. You have a track record of – or an interest in – linking research and development in close cooperation with other stakeholders.

It is a requirement that you can teach at levels including the master’s level, and that you are able to inspire and develop students through teaching methods that focus on applying theory in practice You thrive in a collaborative environment, including working with colleagues who are not necessarily as experienced as you or can match your list of published research. You are ready to blaze the trail and take responsibility for integrated research and development activities linked to RDDC courses. You are able to work independently and systematically, and capable of multi-tasking in complex projects requiring high quality.

Ideally, you have prior knowledge of the Danish Armed Forces or the defence industry. We expect you to have the ability and willingness to explore and appreciate the military context that will frame your research. You are competent at developing and maintaining relevant networks in Denmark and abroad that support and substantiate your research, in close cooperation with the DMT and the RDDC.
