Assistant Professors (tenure track) / Associate Professors in Mechanical Engineering, Department of Engineering, Aarhus University 979843

The Department of Engineering at Aarhus University has a number of open positions as Assistant Professor (tenure track) or Associate Professor at the Section of Mechanical Engineering. The University seeks innovative and visionary engineers/researchers capable of developing the research in Mechanical Engineering.

The positions are available from October 1, 2019 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Research focus
The successful candidate is expected to develop a strong and visible research program in mechanical engineering with research and education on an international level. Candidates in all fields of mechanical engineering are encouraged to apply, and in particular, we seek candidates within the three fields mentioned below:

Fluid Mechanics
Applications are specifically sought in the general field of fluid mechanics. Specifically, the department is looking to recruit in the following areas: Experimental methods, aerodynamics, energy-related applications (wind and/or solar systems), and effects of terrain and buildings on flow. While these areas are of particular interest, exceptional candidates from all areas of fluid mechanics will be considered. The appointee will be expected to work closely with the national wind tunnel facility. In addition, active collaboration with both industry and other research organizations are essential for the position.

Thermodynamics
In the field of thermodynamics, we are looking for applicants who can drive new activities that adds to and expands the existing research and teaching. Our current activities in the field are closely tied to energy conversion and storage as well as system integration of renewable energy in the heating, electricity and gas sectors in particular. Here, applicants with strong expertise in thermal process modelling and/or heat and mass transfer will have a clear advantage. In addition, applicants with expert knowledge on solar systems, both thermal and electrical, could strengthen current activities and complement our existing expertise on wind energy. In both cases, a combination of experimental and numerical experience is seen as an advantage.

Robotics
The robotics manipulation and control group conducts research and provides education that advances the state-of-the-art in both macro-scale and micro-scale robotic manipulations. Applications are as examples manufacturing, biological, and medical engineering. Our research themes include robotic industrial manufacturing and production, robotic single-cell handling, design and control theory of robots with high speed and accuracy, robotic rehabilitation and healthcare, and micro-actuation. Expected research output will be in the areas of robotic manipulations at macro and micro scales with applications to manufacturing, biological, and medical engineering.

The candidates are expected to contribute significantly to the strengthening of the current research activities as well as drive the continued build-up of internationally competitive research groups focused on the areas mentioned. The candidates are expected to be able to compete for national and international research grants and to make important research contributions within the field of mechanical engineering. We seek applicants who excel in both teaching and research.

Tenure Track Program at Aarhus University
Aarhus University offers talented scientists an attractive career perspective via the Tenure Track Program. Highly qualified candidates are appointed as Assistant Professors for a period of up to 6 years with the prospect of a performance-based advancement to a tenured position as Associate Professor. As part of the Aarhus University Tenure Track Program, the University carries out a mid-term evaluation to review the progress of the tenure track candidate, according to the same criteria used in the final tenure review. If the final review is positive, the candidate will be offered a tenured position as Associate Professor at Aarhus University.
Please refer to the tenure track guidelines for the tenure review criteria and process.

Required Qualifications

  • PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in academic leadership, excellent written and verbal communication skills and a strong record of professional and scholarly achievements.
  • Applicants should have a PhD degree and publication experience. Post-graduate research will be one of the evaluation criteria.
  • Research leadership and ability to define and manage research projects is expected.
  • Participation in international and national networks of researchers as well as international project applications.
  • Industrial R&D cooperation.
  • The ability to bring research results into the public domain is necessary, and strong communication skills (in English or Danish) are a clear advantage.

The engineering field in Aarhus University is changing with a rapid growth in student population, major research initiatives as well as through the establishment of a number of new physical facilities in the city centre of Aarhus. We have ambitious plans on increased activities in research, education as well as public and industrial cooperation. The Mechanical Engineering Section within the Department of Engineering has cooperation with universities and advisory service providers in more than 20 countries. The engineering field at Aarhus University is well established with extensive research activities, approximately 400 mechanical engineering students and a long tradition of industrial cooperation that we wish to extend significantly.

The candidate is required to teach relevant courses in the Engineering educational program, and the candidate is encouraged to establish new, specialized courses within mentioned fields at the B.Sc. and/or M.Sc. levels of the Mechanical Engineering program.
