The Department of Environmental Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in Water Treatment.

The Assistant Professor will serve in the Water Technology Section, one of the five sections comprising the Department: Land, Air & Water Resources, Residual Resource Engineering, Urban Water Systems, Environmental Fate and Effect of Chemicals, and Water Technology. The Water Technology Section focuses on processes and technology for treating a range of water types by biological, chemical, physical and electrochemical approaches. The scales are ranging from molecular, over laboratory and pilot scale to full-scale and include experimentation, monitoring and modelling. Strong collaborative relationships exist with the Department’s section Urban Water Systems as well as with other DTU departments through Water DTU, Centre for Water Activities at DTU.

The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

Responsibilities and tasks
The Assistant Professor shall strengthen the Department’s research on water treatment with a view to industrial research/innovation. This includes contributing to creating a new research/innovation area within the Urban Water System section dealing with integration of process models, on-line measurements, control of urban water systems and uncertainty assessment. Relevant research areas from the two sections include:

  • Water supply, urban storm water and/or wastewater (domestic as well as industrial)
  • Process development, monitoring and modelling
  • System development, monitoring and modelling
  • Resource recovery from wastewater and liquid waste
  • Water quality of treated water fit for purpose

The position will intensify teaching activities in the area of water treatment, increase the use of e-learning tools within the section and the department, and contribute to further developing our broad teaching activities.

The Assistant Professor is expected to lecture at the bachelor and master level, and contribute to development of continuing education. Lecturing is to be conducted in collaboration with other faculty members.

Furthermore, the Assistant Professor is expected to provide mentoring and co-supervision of graduate students, to collaborate with the other sections of the
Department, other DTU departments, industry and other external stakeholders, and to facilitate wider knowledge exchange with society at large.

A commitment to collaborate with the faculty and staff of the Department is essential.

Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

The working language is English, but for the sake of teaching at the undergraduate and continuing education level applicants must be able to communicate also in Danish (or another Scandinavian language). For international candidates, DTU offers Danish language courses for the purpose of being able to teach in Danish within the first 2-3 years.

The Assistant Professor will work at the interface between science and engineering, and should

  • identify and develop new research areas
  • think holistically and in an interdisciplinary manner.

The candidate must meet the following criteria for appointment, taking into account his/her career stage:

  • Original scientific output at a high international level
  • Experiences in collaboration within research and development

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.

An assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, an assistant professor can be promoted to an associate professor position after assessment. More information can be found here: Career paths at DTU.
